CRH plc: Stop Cementing Misery in Palestine

We are asking the Ireland based company, CRH plc, to respect the human rights of the Palestinian people by divesting their 25% share of Israel’s sole cement producer, Nesher Cement Enterprises .

This cement is being extensively used in the construction of the illegal West Bank wall and the massive expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied territories of Palestine.

These activities are illegal under international law.

In order to make way for these construction projects Palestinian homes are being demolished and their farms are being destroyed daily.

Life for the Palestinian people living under occupation has become all but impossible as they attempt to negotiate their way past over 500 checkpoints and road closures;
children cannot get to their schools; farmers cannot access their land; workers queue for hours to get through checkpoints; and the sick are prevented from getting to hospitals.

Please support our call asking CRH plc to support and respect the human rights of the Palestinian people by divesting from Mashav.

We, the undersigned, call on CRH plc to immediately divest the 25% stake it holds in the Israeli company Mashav Initiative and Development Ltd.

We are calling for this as we believe that CRH plc, through its ownership of Mashav, to be complicit in the worst elements of Israel’s occupation of Palestine and the human rights abuses of the Palestinian people.

Mashav’s subsidiary, Nesher Cement Enterprises, have a virtual monopoly of cement sales in Israel. It is well documented that this cement is being extensively used in the construction of the illegal West Bank apartheid wall, the illegal settlements and the massive infrastructure of apartheid settler-only roads, bridges and tunnels in the occupied territories of Palestine.

All of these activities are clearly in defiance of many UN Resolutions, The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, International Humanitarian Law, the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the 2004 ruling by the International Court of Justice on the illegality of the Separation Wall.

Your company is well aware of the ever increasing frenzy of illegal construction activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Last year Israel announced plans for more that 4,000 housing units to be built in the West Bank and East Jerusalem on Palestinian land. More Palestinian homes and farms will be demolished to make way for Israeli settlers.

Daily life for the Palestinian people has become all but impossible as they attempt to negotiate their way past over 500 checkpoints, road closures and deep trenches; children cannot get to schools, workers to work, the sick to hospitals even simple things like visiting a friend or relative up the road can take hours or may be prevented altogether. Palestinians are subjected to humiliations by bored young Israeli soldiers at checkpoints.

CRH should not be profiting from human rights abuses being perpetrated by Israel on Palestinians.

As a company which prides itself on its ethical image, such activity is incompatible with the best traditions of CRH plc and from the resulting goodwill which CRH is trying to benefit from.

Please support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights within your sphere of influence and ensure that CRH plc are not complicit in human rights abuses by immediately divesting from Mashav and its operations in the occupied territories of Palestine.

Thank you for reading our petition. We trust that you raise this issue at the next board meeting and divest from your share of Mashav.

Sincerely,
