Connecticut District 5
501 Cannon House Office Builiding
Washington, D. C.  20515-0705

Dear Representative Chris Murphy,

We the undersigned ask that you sign on to become a co-sponsor in the House of Representatives for the nonpartisan bill HR 808 to establish a United States Department of Peace and Nonviolence.  We will gratefully defend and support you for taking this courageous political stance.

The time is ripe for a Department of Peace.  Our national rates of homicide, suicide, bullying, rape, child and spousal abuse, violence in our media, and spending on the military, are shocking.  The World Health Organization estimates the epidemic of violence in our homes, schools, streets, prisons, and among police, gangs, and ethnic groups to cost $300 billion per year.

The annual direct cost of US military involvement in violent conflict is currently $666 billion; the indirect costs -- of veteran's benefits and interest on the national debt due to military spending -- are over $300 billion.   Currently, State Department funding for diplomacy and development, $35 billion, does not address violence within the USA or terrorism.

With a Department of Peace, the United States can be as effective in addressing the sources of violence as in reacting to its symptoms, save trillions of dollars in the process, and provide a secure and prosperous future for our children, for all children worldwide, and the generations to come.

Implementation of the Department of Peace at the Federal level would provide funding and coordination for nonviolent conflict reconciliation programs that are already proven to be effective.  In addition, as our military forces become skilled in peace-building methodologies and the threat of nuclear weapons is reduced, our national budget can be reclaimed for humanitarian purposes.

Please consider:

1. The world is watching to see if America will walk the talk of our founding fathers, supporting human rights and freedom for everyone.
   2. What could be more important than creating true security by living in peace with our fellow human beings everywhere?
   3. How better to support our interests and defuse terrorism than to create a Department of Peace?
   4. How can we solve our climate problems if we are burning our resources in conflict?
   5. How long do you think we have to get it right?

The time to act is now.

Please support our vision for national and global peace by becoming a co-sponsor of HR 808, the bill to establish a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

We thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully submitted,

Representative Chris Murphy: Please be a co-sponsor of this bill as the world is so full of negativity and we need all the diplomatic help we can get!

Peace is when people use a lot less emotion and more of their brain to figure out what is best for everyone instead of selfishly for themselves. Peace is being able to sit down, be civilized, respectful, impartial and kind in choosing and using your words. Peace is forgiving but not forgetting as you should use the past as a tool to better the future and make less mistakes. Peace is forgetting about scheming, retaliation, revenge, spitefulness or anything premeditated and mean-spirited. Peace is respecting everyone as respect is NOT a favor and knowing that we're ALL God's children and deserve the same rights as anyone else regardless of gender, race, age, ethnicity, religion or financial status. Respect is earned and peace is the gift you get for showing respect.

we lost the opportunity to unite the world during 911- it is time that we take another run at filling our responsibility as a powerful nation in this world-

lasting peace begins at home first- inside our own hearts and in our towns and our country and then naturally into the rest of the world

I think A Department of Peace is a very good direction to go; it gives an emphasis to "peace" not war.

i believe that peace is important for two reasons. one, that it is so senseless to wage war like we are doing over in , ahem! IRAQ just to support the USA and saudi arabian " oil lords" . the other is the meaningless waste of human lives and especially the destruction of the enviornment.

like john lennon said, when the time comes that we have no more religion and no more countries to fight over; and we go back to that most infamous 1960's saying. " MAKE LOVE! NOT WAR!

It only seems logical that we have a Dept of Peace if that is what we are striving for. We have plenty of departments in our government that deal with war(not very well in my estimation). So let's start with the goal of Peace and perhaps we will work toward it.

I don't know if we need a reason to seek peace. Peace is the highest goal that we can attain, the one value that will bring a sense of well being throughout the world.

One person at a time, committed to peace, to non-violence, to compassion.

When one becomes intentional about one's worldview, language, and actions, all connections to the rest of life are changed. A Dept of "defense" instills in us a belief that "someone is out to get us." A Department of Peace" conveys a compelling alternative worldview. Lord knows, we need one!

My vision of peace is simple - COEXIST - in terms of family, faith, values, gender identity, education, class. We need to create peace starting in our own homes.

Our very survival on earth depends on facing violence in our country and the world. We must realize that this world is heading for WWIII amd nuclear disastor. Our very survival depends on addressing this issue.

I envision peace as leaders of the world knowing how to be dimlomatic, no name calling, many conferences with peace leaders talking to leaders on how we can compromise on issues. How trying to take over the oil, the land that provides oil, all in OUR interest is not just and is greed and it cannot work any longer. Albert Einstein said, "We shall substantial change our manner of thinking if mankind is to survive". It is time!!! The Doomsday Clock is ticking

A department of peace is a necessary balance to the department of defense. It would demonstrate to the world that our country does not see war as the only solution to differences of opinion and it wil help our nation better focus itself on the goal of peace. As much as we need to focus on defending our freedom through armed conflict, that much and more we need to focus on creating the conditions for peace so that money now invested in defense can be re-invested in the community.

I imagine peace as living in harmony with the earth and all its creatures.

A department of peace shows that we here in Connecticut are itelligent thinking people who want to be part of a coalition of states and intelligent people that know peace is acheived by not waging, sponsoring or agreeing with war.

No War!

After every world war we have read in so many history books about the hope that THAT war will be the one to end all wars-Well history has taught us that humans seem to create a lot of the same mistakes...There must be a deliberate creation of an office that works to promote justice by empowering that office with the means to purchase the weapons of peace: education, food, medicine and work. There needs to be the realization that working to maintain peace is much, much more difficult than bombing the dickens out of the opposition....

Well a simplified answer is: Peace is as a constant struggle to maintain balance of needs and wants/power/control...

we need to recognize that we are all citizens of a global village.

a peaceful world will be one in which every person on this planet has nourishing food, clean water, healthcare and education.

I firmly believe that investing in war primarily creates more war. It is time for us to realize that we live in a global community and as long as there are people who don't have food, don't have a home, don't have a way to provide for theor own future, don't have hope, we will have terrorism. We need to stop investing in war and start investing in enabling all of the citizens of our planet to have these basic things. Only then will the terrorists go away.

Dear Chris, It is very simple for me, I want to be proud of my country again. The Department of Peace is a step toward a global vision. There are so many small grass roots groups doing tremendous work toward solving conflicts with peaceful tools and making strides. Our country is teetering so precariously yet so many people want to live in harmony here and across the globe. Won't you please sign us up for a giant step forward in the hard work of reconciliation worldwide?

I see peace as a hard job, beginning with the understanding that conflict is normal. We must stop trying to control the outcome with violence. Nonviolent means to conflict reconciliation is how I envision peace. It is a science and an art and can be accomplished with strategies that lead to a win win outcome by winning the opponent over NOT by overpowering. Peace is possible. Peace is right here, right now.

# 14:

I hope it will help coordinate our efforts to bring about peace through Kingian nonviolence.

Peace is not the absence of violence, which is peace without justice. Peace is evident when all persons are treated with respect and justice for all prevails.

Please tell Representative Chris Murphy why you believe a Department of Peace is important. Read the News! Our whole world is disintegrating due to intolerance.

How do you envision peace? There are few cliches which would cover my vision of peace. Win-Win. Where our concerns as a Nation were Food Clothing, Health Care and Shelter for the people. Supporting conflict resolution as the first means of defense not "Weapons of Mass Destruction" Religious tolerance- where every religion is respected. Financial Responsibility- So our children won't be subjected to abject poverty. Global environmental concerns- So we will have a planet to live peacefully on.

Peace honors all that is human in us while armed conflict devalues life and destroys the huuman spirit. When we engage in war not only do we destroy our communities we lose our self respect and the opportunity to develope our potential as human beings

Peace means despite our differences we will use all our God given talent as humans to work together to create an enviroment here we all can live together and care for our families and planet.

As long as we only invest our power and resources in war making we will be teaching that violence is an acceptable soultion to conflict. We must counter-balance these outdated concepts and teach reliable peaceful alternatives in the family, home and community. A Department of Peace would support creating a sustainable, balanced and just world. A Department of Peace is needed as a tool for curbing violence in our state and in the world. We need a counter balance to our Dept. of Defense that has little if no emphasis on peace as a means of reconciliation with other nations. At a domestic level, violence is harming children and women in particular. Give peace a chance, sign up to be a co-sponsor of HR 808 to develop a U.S. Dept. of Peace and Nonviolence along with Representative John Larson. With creative co-sponsors like you, this bill could become a positive force towards nonviolence and justice. Deborah Helck, Litchfield, CT

I envision peace as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did through his 6 principles of nonviolence and conflict resolution. One where there is justice for all through mutual respect and negotiation for a win win for both parties.
