Demand A Native American History Month

Target:

We have a Black History Month and A Hispanic History Month but we have no month to celebrate and educate ourselves about Americas First Peoples. As a mother and soon to be teacher, I think that our nations' children are being denied the quality education all children deserve. We are  now into the 21st century, and muticultural studies are a vital part of our children's future. Sign my petition and help me convince Congress our children deserve to know about what Native Americans have done in the past and how vital they are to our society today.

As an American history teacher and an American of Native descent, I feel it is imperative that our young people realize that the Europeans did not "find" this continent, as it was not lost. The people who lived here were civilized in every sense of the word. We must preserve their heritage and our country.

Rather than singling out any "ethnic group" why don't we have an American History Month. Say July. We can celebrate and learn about all of us in the USA. This country was created over thousands of years by many different peoples. Why not celebrate each other as Great Americans?

It does my heart good to see the People coming together for the good of all the Indigenous People of this land. Our children need to see what the real roots of our Ancestors were really like and not from the view-point of the whitemans interpretation.

President H.W. Bush signed a resolution in 1990 designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month. It has been celebrated annually for almost 19 years. http://www.readwritethink.org/calendar/calendar_day.asp?id=618

We should show honor to the first people of this land by having a Native history month to help others understand the reality of the Native American. Not to learn by what they see in movies.

My ancestors were the original Americans and as such, we deserve to have our own history month. Native Americans should have their history known. We have been in the background too long. Let the truth, culture, and magnitude of pride be shown. We are the 'turtle island' history.

I am Native American and French; I feel that we should honor my ancestors with a Native American History Month so that the people of this country will understand the plight of our people. This country has Black history month this country celebrates just about every one else why does this country not honor it true people of this country. Don Peck

I want my children to be proud of where they have come from, why should they sit back and see people that came to America celebrate their culture during different months and not have a chance to learn about theirs or even have their culture even acknowledged. I feel it is only right to have a month that is dedicated to the original Americans.

As a Native American, I believe we should have a month to celebrate and teach like the blacks and hispanics. I believe people deserve to know the truth about Native Americans and see that we are not savages like everybody believes.
