Demand PSU End Experimentation Following Animal Deaths

Over recent days, Penn State University has had a courtyard full of protesters, responding to recent animal lab deaths, demanding that animal research cease at the institution.

Just last month, PSU was issued a warning by the US Department of Agriculture after flagrant violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

During this recent visit by USDA inspectors, one newborn puppy was found dead, crushed by the floor grating of its enclosure along with three dead gerbils dead due to unsuitable sipper tubes. Among other issues were 15 heifers found standing in their own excrement to feed; algae growing in the drinking water of four horses; and, two dogs with paw cysts that had been completely undetected by caregivers.

PSU was not fined for the violations, they were merely warned.

We cannot let PSU get away with such heinous actions. They are sending a message to their students and the public that animal neglect and cruelty are acceptable.

Tell PSU that their animal research needs to come to a halt. Not only are they incapable of ensuring that basic minimal care standards are met, but they are letting animals needlessly die on their watch. This is not research we can trust or support.

It has come to our attention that you have received been warned by the US Department of Agriculture for flagrantly violating the federal Animal Welfare Act.

After the recent discovery of dead animals in your labs, as well as animals that are not having their basic minimal care needs met, such as clean drinking water or clean living space, it is time for you to bring your animal research to a halt.

When your scientists are so oblivious to the basic welfare of these animals, are we really so confident in the science behind your studies? No, not at all. We don't trust your science and we don't want to be a part of it.

The time for PSU to set an example for their students is now. The university needs to stand up for what is humane and right. Death and neglect at PSU hands is unacceptable.

We ask that you commit to shutting down your animal research labs in order to have the continued support of your students and the general public. We cannot be proud of an institution that so blatantly disregards humanity.
