Don't Build A $6 Billion Nuclear Bomb Factory

Ignoring concerns over a nuclear disaster in an area subject to earthquakes and wildfires, the U.S. Department of Energy will go forward with plans on $6 billion dollar nuclear facility at its Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

Truthout describes this nuclear facility as "a multibillion-dollar money pit that lacks a clear mission, is fraught with design complications and faces ever-increasing costs."

Watchdog groups see it as a DOE effort to escalate nuclear weapons production and "turn a research facility into a bomb factory," says an Associated Press report. In addition to concerns over nuclear weapons proliferation, one group is particularly worried about the area's increased threats of seismic activity and a duplication of Japan's Fukushima disaster.

Adding deficit woes to these concerns, there is simply no justification for this facility.

Tell Obama to cut the funding for the Los Alamos Nuclear Facility.

.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you weigh the risks against the benefits of the proposed $6 billion dollar nuclear facility at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

As a Truthout article notes,  you "recently pointed to the nuclear arsenal as a target for budget cuts..."  And we feel scraping the plans for this facility would be a good place to begin that effort.

As the article also points out, there are a number of other reasons to do so and also dropping the building plans for the CMRR would not negatively impact  permanent employment in the area

Please read this article's discussion of the numerous reasons this facility is a bad idea and also take even more seriously the concern about new data on the Los Alamos area's susceptibility to earthquakes.  Even though a safety committee is working to ensure the facility is designed to withstand a quake of up to 7.3 magnitude, nobody says they can guarantee that the builders would follow through on the plans.

Last, but not least, we agree with Truthout's Dana Liebelson in pointing out that this facility:
...undermines the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), which the US and Russia ratified last February. The treaty requires that the number of strategic US nuclear warheads be reduced to 1,550 over the first seven years of the agreement. The US is not only currently above that number, but it also has an ample stockpile of plutonium pits that could be reused - at least 14,000 of them. In light of this supply, CMRR-NF - which includes a vault capable of holding the amount of plutonium in 1,500 warheads - is simply unnecessary.

Please cut the funding for this project. Don't build this new facility in Los Alamos.

Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
