Don't Kill Iguanas- Relocate Them

Puerto Rico has announced plans for a massive cull of an invasive species of iguana and for the sale of harvested meat, according to The Associated Press.

Iguanas are considered an endangered species throughout most of Latin America, but Puerto Rico is overrun with them, in part because they breed so quickly and have few natural predators. They were first introduced to Puerto Rico in the 1970's when owners released them into the wild.

The lizzard originated in South America and is native to Central America, ranging over a large geographic area from southern Brazil as far north as Mexico.

We ask Puerto Rico to consider capturing the animal and relocating it to parts of the world where it originated, back to the rainforest and to places where it is considered endangered- instead of killing them and exporting their meat for $6.00 per pound. Although they may be a pest in Puerto Rico, they are an important part of the balance of ecosytems elsewhere.
