The Redwood Curtain Entrance

Don't let Cal-Trans rip a hole through the Redwood Curtain!

The Ancient Redwoods that line Highway 101 through Richardson Grove State Park are threatened by an unwarranted realignment project. Multiple conservation groups, countless local citizens and local small businesses are joined to oppose this unnecessary and expensive project. Richardson Grove is considered the entrance through the Redwood Curtain. CalTrans proposes to cut the roots of 30 old growth trees and remove 87 other trees that surround the old growth trees, and to erect a 300 foot long retaining wall. These acts will have a huge impact on the unique ambiance of the grove and endangered wildlife. We urge you to take action now to protect these Millennial Ancient Redwoods. Visit Save Richardson Grove and blog for more information; and please sign this petition that will be sent to CalTrans, the Governor, and State and local representatives. Tell your friends and family how important these Ancient Trees are for future generations to enjoy. Only 3% remains of our Ancient Forests. We can't afford to put our State's natural beauty and local heritage in jeopardy.

We the undersigned urge you to examine the proposed highway realignment project through Richardson Grove State Park. The project proposes to cut the roots of 30 old growth trees, remove 87 other trees that surround the old growth trees, and to erect a 300 foot long retaining wall. These acts will have a huge impact on the unique ambiance of the grove and resident endangered wildlife such as the Marbled Murrelette and Northern Spotted Owl. CalTrans has failed to submit an Environmental Impact Report that addresses these issues, along with the agency's failure to allow for public comment of the Final Environmental Impact Report. We urge you as our elected officials and representatives to take action to protect the Redwood Curtain entrance in Richardson Grove State Park. There are many alternatives to this expensive, unnecessary, and destructive project. We ask that CalTrans is held accountable to the same environmental regulations that industry is beheld to. State agencies are not above State and Federal Law. We hope that you help uphold State and Federal environmental reviews for this project, and protect the Redwood Legacy of our State. We demand that our objections will be included in the public comments section of the final EIR. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Thank you so much for signing the Save Richardson Grove Petition!

I have sent your petition and comments to Caltrans as well as multiple representatives and elected officials. It is our hope that this project wil be stopped, or in the least altered, in order to not have an affect on the Ancient Trees and Wildlife.

The Center for Biological Diversity has created an online petition to help stop the project!

Please take just a second to sign the CBD petition at:

http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2167/t/5243/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1629

and spread the good word about the effort to save the Redwood Curtain to your friends, family, and community by posting a short alert on Facebook or Myspace. Imagine how many people you can reach with this simple act!

If Caltrans chooses to continue the RIP(Richardson Grove Improvement Project), your help will be needed. Humboldt County has a rich history of non-violent civil disobedience, and Caltrans has picked the wrong place to mess with. Local activists and Native Elders have chosen to oppose this project with non-violent civil disobedience. You can bet that this may be one of the biggest and most diverse demonstrations in the history of the Redwood Region, the battle to defend the Redwood Curtain.

However, it cannot be done without your help.

Please visit http://saverichardsongrove.org/ for more information about the RIP.

For updates on direct action, please visit http://www.saverichardsongrove.blogspot.com/.

Our thanks and appreciation to EPIC

and Trees Foundation http://treesfoundation.org/index.shtml

for their diligent work and grassroots support. These organizations are working very hard on a myriad of environmental issues, and can only continue to defend the Earth through your generosity and support.

For peace through action and non-violent dissent,

What an IDIOTIC plan! What, this is being done to BENEFIT BIG CHAIN STORES' TRANSPORTATION???? So that small businesses, small businesspeople and their families and the communities that depend on them, can go whooosh! down-the-tubes so that more POISONOUS JUNK FROM CHINA can be sold? for the CAPITALIST PROFIT of a very few chain-store CEOs? {Certainly NOT for the "benefit" of their underpaid, overworked, exploited, no-health-benefits Chain Store employees!} And for THIS, SELFISH GREEDY PROFIT-TAKING REASON, to SACRIFICE Sacred Forests centuries in the making? Like destroying a NATURAL CATHEDRAL to put in an ugly, socially-destructive WAL-MART! And, TYPICALLY, TYPICALLY, they are LYING to get their way; LYING about what will and will not be cut; LYING, LYING, DELIBERATELY LYING TO YOU THE PUBLIC about the EXTENSIVE AND PERMANENTLY-IRREPARABLE DAMAGE these cuts will OBVIOUSLY do! ANYONE WITH A BRAIN, CAN SEE THAT THEY ARE LYING; AND WHY THEY WOULD WANT TO LIE FOR THEIR OWN SELFISH MEGA-PROFITS! As they ALWAYS DO!

We should give the redwoods growth a value that legislators can understand. A very conservative estimate of the average old-growth redwood's age might be 600 years. The currently (un-livable) minimum wage is $8.50. Therefore each tree would have earned ~44.7 million dollars for the growing it did.

It is not ok to cut down old growth redwood trees. There are so few left that there is never a justifiable reason. These trees need to be protected. Multiple conservation groups, countless local citizens and local small businesses are joined to oppose the RIP(Richardson grove Improvement Project). Cutting down trees and damaging an ancient forest's root system is no improvement on it.

While CalTrans says they will remove very few trees (at one point) or no trees (at another point in time), what they aren't telling folks is how many roots of trees they will be damaging to accomodate road-work. I read 48 trees will have their roots chopped up. Redwoods whose roots are damaged don't live as long or as healthy as trees left alone. I also don't believe the "We're doing this for safty" rhetoric, nor do I buy into the "Local businesses will be more prosperous" line they feed out to the public. I see no reason to destroy these trees primarily to make it easier for big chain stores to go about their business. Thank You, Susan K Campbell

We don't need 4 lane highways through old growth redwoods. Find a way around them and save the sacred forests. Trees are more important than cars. Duh! These destroyers should be put in jail and kept there for at least 500 years.

This forest is irreplaceable. It should be protected and respected. Do we want our legacy to our children to be mere photographs? NO ONE has the right to obliterate these trees.

One of the reasons I like living here is because the redwoods act as a pyhsical shield from corporations and things exspanding here. The redwoods keep us safe from Wal-marts and other nasting companys that are going to take away from our local buissness.

If cal-trans does this then what is next. When will it stop! Then before we relize there will be nothing left. Like the redwoods soon might be!
