Christie, Don't Veto Same-Sex Unions!
These days, Chris Christie can't seem to make up his mind about equality. Even as he proposes to "let the people of New Jersey decide" by putting gay marriage on the election ballot, he maintains that he will veto a bill that would endow same-sex unions with the same benefits as marriage.
Making civil unions equal to marriage is an immediate matter of human and civil rights.
Under current laws, gay couples in many states do not have the same rights of inheritance, social security benefits, and family insurance benefits that their hetero counterparts enjoy.
Tell Governor Christie to sign Bill S-1/A-1 which guarantees immediate civil union benefits to same sex partners.
We the undersigned applaud your stated intention to put gay marriage on the New Jersey ballot. However, you have a more immediate opportunity to redress the injustice done to same sex couples. By signing Bill S-1/A-1, you will simply be giving the same civil rights to gay couples that heterosexual couples already enjoy, including inheritance rights, the right to determine the fate of an injured or dying loved one, the right to insure one's immediate family, etc. Failure to put same sex unions on the same legal footing as church marriages is a grave moral failure and a violation of the church/state separation that made America great.
