Drop Charges against Juan Ruiz

Sign an online petition to have Juan Ruiz's ridiculous charges dropped! This petition will be sent to the US Attorney who is prosecuting Juan's case.

To the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego, California:

We, the undersigned, demand that the U.S. Government drop all charges against Juan Ruiz pertaining to the November 11 protest in downtown Calexico, CA. Mr. Ruiz was participating in a peaceful event when he and others were attacked by U.S. Border Patrol agents without warning. Mr. Ruiz is an active member of his community in Madison, Wisconsin where he has worked as a radio journalist, contributing his stories to WORT. He also spent several months' time as a relief volunteer on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Ruiz posed absolutely no threat to the border patrol agents who tackled and arrested him. The United States government has no need to continue with the prosecution of Mr. Ruiz, a peaceful demonstrator exercising a constitutionally protected right.

Background

Juan Ruiz was arrested November 11, 2007 by the Border Patrol in downtown Calexico, CA at the closing rally of the No Borders Camp. After a week of cordial relationships between camp participants and Border Patrol agents, the Border Patrol attacked the peacefully assembled crowd with pepper spray bullets and batons. They made three arrests, including Juan Ruiz, who is charged with two counts of assault on a federal officer. These charges are ridiculous- if anyone was assaulted in this incident, it was Juan and fellow camp participants.

Be strong Juan. You have every right to move freely on this beautiful Earth. The borders are completely imaginary; therefore, they will not be here forever. May the borders be erased soon abd humans see the violence and absurdity of their delusions. I admire all if you who are standing strong there in the South.

Dear Juan, I just saw the video of you being attacked and arrested. I am completely disgusted by the way you were treated. I know that you were protesting peacefully, because I have seen the video as proof and I have seen you at other marches in Madison. I know that you would never intentionally provoke a figure of authority. You are a good friend, a caring person, and you do not deserve this. If anything, you deserve a medal for having suffered this way and for surviving it. I am very proud of you and I am happy to do whatever I can to help you. Your cause is my cause. We all love you! In solidarity, Eliana Veronica Davis

hi Juan i just saw the video of the no boarders camp getting broken up. That was crazy it reminded me of a video from Utah of a Dance Rave that was violently broken up by police. Due to not having all the proper permits. In your case it is serious because of the disregard to your right to protest and peaceful assembly. What all of you were taking part in was truly inspiring. I will keep up with your situation. So i can share your story with my friends and family. In Solidarity Colin Summers

I was outraged when I saw the video. Anyone who watches the video can see that this young man should not have been arrested. Even my young children who also watched this video could see that as plain as day.
