Easton Whitewater Park

By signing this petition, you are asking the Wildlands Conservancy, the City of Easton and the DCNR / Delaware Canal State Park to include a world-class whitewater course in the future redevelopment of the Easton and Chain dams and surrounding vicinity on the Lehigh River.

Recent studies have concluded that the shad and other migratory fish are not able to pass the dams in suitable numbers to reestablish a self-sustaining population. Plans are underway that will significantly alter these two dams, the river and surrounding lands and parks in an effort to support fish migration.

The proposal our group is petitioning for would bring a word-class Olympic caliber whitewater course into the river and dam redevelopment plans. These courses are popular and well known in most of Europe and are growing in popularity here in the US.  The course is usually built in a portion of the riverbed using existing water flow and a combination of natural rock and boulders in combination with manmade but natural construction. A spectator park with walkways and gardens would complement the course surroundings.

This proposed whitewater course would improve the quality of the downtown experience drastically and provide new economic opportunities for Easton and the surrounding communities.

We the undersigned are asking the Wildlands Conservancy, the City of Easton and the DCNR / Delaware Canal State Park to include a world-class whitewater course in the future redevelopment of the Easton and Chain dams and surrounding vicinity on the Lehigh River.

We realize that the present condition of the dams is holding back natural fish migration and that plans are in process to improve the Easton and Chain dams.  We are asking that you include design of a whitewater course in the dam improvements. We feel that the inclusion of this course would improve the quality of the downtown Easton experience drastically and provide new economic opportunities for Easton and the surrounding communities.

Thank you for reading and please give our petition consideration.
