RESORTS OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES FOCUSES ON TERRAIN PARK SAFETY WITH AN INDUSTRY-LEADING INITIATIVE

Calgary, AB %u2013 November 8, 2007 - Resorts of the Canadian Rockies Inc. (RCR) is recognized as an industry leader in providing world-class guest experiences at its mountain resorts throughout Canada. In doing so, RCR believes that safety in its mountain environments is one of its most important values. Supporting this mandate, RCR is moving in a new direction that will enhance safety at all of its resorts.

RCR cares deeply about the well-being of all of its guests and takes responsibility for their care very seriously. %u201CWe are undertaking an industry-leading initiative,%u201D says Matt Mosteller, Senior Director of Business Development for Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. %u201CAll man-made snow jumps will be eliminated from RCR terrain parks this season.%u201D

%u201CWe have found that one of the main issues that increase the likelihood of serious injury on our mountains is big air,%u201D says Mosteller. %u201CWhen we are making decisions about safety at our resorts, the big jumps in the terrain parks always come into the equation. We decided to make a change.%u201D

Continues Mosteller, %u201CWe are committed to providing our guests with a safe experience at our mountains. We realize that this change may disappoint some guests who regularly use these man-made jump features. However, we believe we have a strong moral obligation to not compromise the safety of our guests.%u201D

At the same time, RCR will be making an increased investment in new rails and features for RCR%u2019s terrain parks. For example, this year%u2019s RCR TELUS Park at Lake Louise Mountain Resort features the highest-ever investment in new, state-of-the-art rail features that will cater to a wide variety of ages and abilities. RCR will have rail parks this season at Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Fernie Alpine Resort and Nakiska.

With the new rail park format, RCR will host a Rail Jam Series that will take place at Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Fernie Alpine Resort and Nakiska. Features used in the Rail Jam Series will be suitable for a high level of competition, while also adhering to safe practices.

For the past three seasons, RCR has also worked hard on developing its family-friendly terrain parks. These unique parks, separate from the larger parks, feature small rails, boxes and rollers, encouraging learning, safety and fun in a non-intimidating environment. The feedback on these parks has been positive and they will continue to develop at all of the resorts.

We the undersigned,
request that Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) revoke their decision to remove man-made ski jumps from their terrain parks. As riders of your mountains, we believe these features are vital to the progression of skiing and snowboarding, and by removing them, you are in turn losing credit as resorts who support the future progression of alpine sports.

Come on. People have to recognize the risks of skiing for giant mounds of snow. How can you not realize that sooner or later, what goes up, must come down. So stupid, i hate those people, they make great places have to do stupid things like not having ski jumps. It has become a major part of how people ski and taking it out of your resort will result in a loss of tourists and even local customers.

I will now be full time attending sunshine and any other resort willing to let me ride my own way. I always took full responsibility for my own actions on the mountin, if i bust my face on a jump i blame myself. You won't see me around anymore until this has been changed.

Despite having the email addresses of their customers who prebooked passes online, RCR did not make any effort to make contact so their customers could make plans to go to a decent resort with the facilities promised by RCR at the time of booking. Instead, they waited until it was too late for most people to cancel their holidays or season accomodation without incurring a significant cost. This in itself is a corrupt and disgraceful business practice, especially as RCR have publicly stated that they were discussing removing jumps for years. The rail park put in at Fernie is meagre and unacceptable despite the best efforts of the park staff. RCR stated that even using a park pass sytem which has been extremely effective system in other resorts, they still wouldn't build jumps because people would duck the rope, park passes were not effective. Surprisingly, they are now charging an extra $5 for a park pass. That way, people like me can pay even more for a 3rd rate facility when RCR don't belive that the pass is effective. Corrupt again. Customers like myself pre-booked passes and comitted to coming to Fernie from overseas because of the facilities promoted on the RCR website. RCR haven't delivered and trying to get a response to complaint letters is akin to getting blood from a stone. Corrupt.

Why dont you close the glaciers too to save all the people who die in avalanches. Taking away jumps wont change the fact that skiing will alaways have its risks.

By eliminating terrain park jumps under the rationale that they just aren't worth the risk, RCR takes a radical stance in a slippery-slope argument as well as expresses their lack of care for these snow sports themselves. Participating in skiing and snowboarding require a certain amount of risk in the first place. Well built and maintained jumps do not account for a large addition to this initial risk. If RCR truly wants to eliminate major injuries and fatalities at their resorts, they should just close them down altogether because, realistically, it is just as likely that some novice rider will kill themselves by hitting a tree as a terrain park jump. Take it from a person who's had a shoulder reconstruction and 2 ACL reconstructions in the last 2 years due to skiing injuries: We understand the risk of riding terrain park jumps and have felt its consequences; it is well worth the risk.

I really do not understand how rails are considered safer than jumps, somehow I think this is a legal matter and you need to rethink your decision. The back of your lift ticket has a waiver of responsability and it should not make any difference what you are doing, boarding, jumping skiing or just standing on the run, people have to be reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewqrtyuioplkjhgfdsazxcvbnm

They waited until everyone purchased their season passes before announcing this. They took away the halfpipe last season, I will not be investing in another season pass if they keep downgrading their parks. Its sad.

You people at RCR are stupid!!!! Do u realize by this decision more people will build there own and/or go into the back country(prolly unprepared) to build these jumps. I belive that this descion is going to lead to more people hurt and a loss of bussniess at ur resorts. U fuckin idiots

How can any one progress in this growing sport if you strip them of the option to hit bigger jumps. First you take away the halfpipe, which is an olympic sport now this!! there is enough rails on the streets, there are no jumps on the streets!! make the parks private to specific skill levels, and charge a fee to get in! You can bet Greg Todds will be turning over in his grave if this garbage happens!

I was planning on taking my son on a ski vacation, including several of your resorts. However once he heard of your lack of support for "freestyle" terrain he said he refused to provide you with any business. We will have a fun time at other resorts, but will avoide yours untill you reinstate "freestyle" terrain.
