Enforce Bullfighting Ban in Catalonia

Recently, bullfighting fans from all over the world gathered in the Catalonian city of Barcelona, Spain. Excitement hummed through the crowded streets; people were there to see the last regional bullfight before a ban goes into effect in 2012.
Many locals are in full support of the ban and do not see the value of such a torturous practice, despite the power of tradition. But others are against the ban, and there is a great deal of talk about petitioning an overturn.

It brings those who of us from across the globe who support the humane treatment of animals great hope to see the recent decision of Catalonia's Regional Parliament to ban bullfighting in the region beginning in 2012. We are beyond pleased by the courage of the administration as it takes a step in this new and more humane direction.
The cruelty surrounding bullfighting is of great concern to us. As you know, not everyone agrees that bullfighting in Catalonia should come to an end, and it worries us that we have already heard rumblings of petitions to dismantle this ban before it even goes into effect.
Please do your part to phase out the cruelty inherent in bullfighting and stick by the ban currently in place. It is important to countless supporters of the ban, and it is also important to the animals who will now have more peaceful and cruelty-free lives.
We appreciate that it is difficult to be the first region in Spain to ban this tradition, but this is the right decision, and whether it takes years or decades, other regions will follow your lead in rejecting violent traditions.
