Encouage GuardAnimal Use! No More Traps!

  • by: Aaron Altman

It's commonplace to use traps and aerial gunning to control coyotes and other predators in the vicinity of ranches, farms, and other sources of livestock. Despite all the money invested in these methods, It still fails to protect the livestock and their owner's livelyhood. Traps indiscrimently harm not just their intended targets, but also other wildlife, domesticated animals, and even people.  Aerial gunning is more focused but it kills too many animals, most of which were no threat to livestock. However those who use guard animals such as dogs, donkeys, and llamas tend to have their livestock losses from 21% minimum drop sharply to 7% maximum. Predators, whether as common as coyotes, or as rare as condors, are an important part of the ecosystem in and around where the livestock graze and habit and without them the land itself suffers. Guard animals are eco-friendly and available for adoption. This way many animals in rescues and shelters will find productive homes. Please tell the National Livestock Producers Association to consider this humane, ecologically sound, and economically viable solution.
