It has recently been brought to our attention that inmates are suffering extreme abuse at the hands of corrections officers in Uinta Unit inside Utah State Prison in Draper, UT. There is proof that the abusive situation in this unit has been a long term problem that has yet to be corrected by the state of Utah in spite of multiple deaths and lawsuits. Former Utah DOC directors, Lane McCotter and Gary Deland both stepped down amid scandals of abuse and inmate deaths inside USP while under their direction and control. After leaving UTDOC both men went on to set up and manage Abu Garib where they created yet another torturous and abuse filled prison. This lends even more credibility to the claims that abuse in Utah prisons has been well documented and yet, ignored.

To Whom It May Concern,
It has recently been brought to our attention that inmates are suffering extreme abuse at the hands of corrections officers in Uinta Unit inside Utah State Prison in Draper, UT.
According to numerous well documented complaints, copies of inmate grievances, corroboration from former inmates as well as sworn statements from inmates, the abusive conditions continue to this day. Inmates in Uinta Unit are in danger from corrections officers who are out of control and should be held criminally liable for their actions. Inmates have provided sworn statements and written permission to use their names publicly and have agreed to cooperate with investigators and media to stop the abuse that they have either been subject to or have been witness to that is being inflicted by the officers who are paid to protect them.
We are asking for these conditions to be exposed and for the public be made aware of what is being done to men who are living in sub-standard and sub-human conditions. Loss of freedom is the punishment prescribed by the court. Corrections officers who take it upon themselves to add more punishment on top of the court mandated imprisonment increase the odds of dangerous, angry and damaged people being released back into society and thereby, placing us all in more danger.

Prisoners are sent to prison as punishment, not for punishment. There is many forms of abuse in Utah State Prison. Investigate MAP/OMR, FDr policies, AE policies for those who "work" at USP. Then follow up by investigating grievances filed since Gary Deland's reign. Gary's brother in law, was the governor, during his reign. There is much psychological abuse in USP. It is not restricted to the Uinta (max) facilities, it is throughout the prison. Facilities at Draper are Timpanogos, Wasatch, Oquirrhs, Special Services Facilities, and another that was the women's facilities. They house people in Gunnison, Utah, the Central Utah Prison, in many county jails, Promonotory, Pergotory, and some out of state, that I know of. Abuses at Abu Grhab occur in Utah State Prison, and no one wants to pay attention like they do to those outside the country. Lawsuits are dismissed by the courts too often. Contract attorney's do more to help the prison then prisoners. Censorship is in many forms there. Media people that did actual reporting were kicked out and forbidden from returning. The system in Utah is out of control. Orin Hatch is an important figure in US politics. ... The Utahn served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2001, and I believe helps protect those who run the prison. Is that why people were hand picked from USP to go to Abu Grhab? Funny thing, the governor was Gary Deland's Brother in Law during reign of Utah and USP respectively. Gary Deland, left USP, and formed an agency in Central Utah, to sell his policies, practices and procedures to other prisons. Imagine that, he went on to Abu Grhab. You want the truth, talk to prisoners without the influence, control and fear of repercussions. Look for the consistencies of what they say. Read all grievances and lawsuits and you will learn horrors of reality. Stop the forewarning of visits to investigate so that truth is revealed. Ex Prisoner, spent 20 years of false imprisonment under custody of USP, Number 18367, OBSCIS: 00042818

How does the DOC expect prisoners to reform themselves when they are constantly abused and tormented from within???? Since when did our DOC not have to abide by the laws of the land? This only causes inmates to become more hostile and tormented and for what? To be released with all this built up anger from the abuse they suffered? Those that abuse the prisoners should be brought up on charges, no, not should be but MUST be brought up on charges of brutality!

My husband is in the utah system. I agree with everything the letter has stated. Its inhuman how people are being treated. A lot of them including my husband just want to be able to do the time in peace, cause not only do they have survive prison life with other inmates that they might not get along with but they also have to be careful with certain guards. And in the long run eventually affect their time in there. We need to stop cruel guards and keep an eye out on the inmates that really do harm, to themselves, guards, and other inmates.

brutality and indifference never "rehabilitated" a convict; there use is only to subdue the convict, to later return him to the community, a dangerous individual. There are other approaches to bend the will of an individual to conform to prison norm without brutality and indifference to a human's cry for help.

What's going on in the USP is representative of what's going on with correctional officers all through this state...abuse of power, no regard for the lives of others, no sense of decency. It happens all over in our jails, too. When you abuse those you are supposed to be protecting, you WILL get what's coming to you...in this life or the next...and I won't have one ounce of pity for you when it happens. STOP THE ABUSE!!!

I am somewhat surprised to see this info as I have a son in Utah and he says the schools there are excellent. Often states with good schools have better prisons. All states have abuse in prisons, it is always wrong, no matter why the person is there.
I beg of the people of Utah to work to stop this abuse now.

The abuse on USA prisons needs to stop. America is supposed to be a civilised country that SHOULD be leading the way with Humane treatment, respect, and having a character that is above reproach. Instead, it's a contradiction to humanity with the abuse being condoned, and its Justice record consistently sullied by convictions founded on Misconduct and career aspirations, and then abuse being constantly discovered. It's a great shame for all those that ARE genuine in their endeavours, to have their efforts and reputation sullied by the dirt.

Please remember that also prisoners are human beings. They are punished by imprisonment. This does not mean they need to be treated worse than dogs. Why should anywhere in the USA prisoners be treated like that in our times? We don't live in middle age and there is no reason for any of this. It makes things only worse. Why don't those people working there and who are in charge understand that it makes a much better working climate if prisoners are being treated correctly. It does not help anyone to not treat people, even if they are prisoners, decently. If you want respect then treat others respectfully.

Abuse ANYWHERE is an injustice EVERYWHERE; therefore, to abuse these inmates in Utah is to be cruel and inhumane to a mass of people. Inmates don't deserve to tolerate suffering due to another mans psychopathic personality. STOP the Absue!!!

Inmates are human beings, regardless of what their sentence is for. It is inexcusable to abuse fellow human beings. The US treats it's prisoners worse than any other nation, why is this happening? It says a lot about the US society.
