Every year in Denmark (Faroe Islands), around 2,000 Calderon Dolphins are slaughtered for their flesh and as a "heroic" pratice to show manhood.
It is necessary to mention that the Calderon Dolphin, like All other world wide Dolphins, are in danger of extinction.
Entire pods of these intelligent sea mammals are herded into coves by boaters. They are driven onto shore to be killed. Terrified animals see and hear their family members being ripped apart. (The sea remains a bright bloody red for days after the hunt.) Fishermen slice the whales heads and other body parts with sharp knives, while they are still alive and thrashing to escape. If the whales do not go 'willingly' onto shore, a long, metal hook will be inserted into their blowholes and they will be literally dragged onto the rocky shore.
Undercover video has shown that some animals take up to an hour to finally die after being hauled onto the beach and cut into.
Young children are allowed to participate in these disturbing mass hunts. They may help kill the whales. Is this really something that should be shown and taught to the future generation? Should we preach violence to them?

I realise that fishing is an important part of the economy in the Faroe Islands - going out in a fishing boat in rough seas is one thing but this senseless massacre is so wrong. This is not proving adulthood or maturity, quite the opposite. Anyone who could do this with their bare hands is not fit to walk amongs humans! I don't care if it's part of their culture. Denmark is supposed to be an enlightened and civilised country but this shows they have a long way to go.

I don't see how brutally killing animals you don't understand or respect proves "manhood." It seems cowardly to me. But I don't understand the culture. If you want to change a culture then why not learn about them; find people within that culture who want to change the underlying beliefs that fuel this practice, and help them to change their own culture? Signing a petition in judgment of these people feels arrogant to me, because my culture has a core institution that recruits young people to be brutal killers too. And we also tell these young recruits that they are brave and good. This core institution is our military.

STOP CALLING IT IN DENMARK !!! Faroe Islands has since 1948 been an autonomous region and have thereby their own government and rulings. I am the first to disagree with the killings but you have to put the blame where it is supposed to be put.... so blame Faroe Islands. I'm quite certain that if you went to the Faroe Islands and called them Danes they would punch you. What you are doing to Denmark's reputation with this is exactly the same as the Faroe people are doing to the Calderon Dolphins..... slaughtering! Maybe Sonja Nielsen and I should start our own petition to stop people pointing their fingers at the wrong people and get their facts straight before they start yelling!

Again, I have to say that these terrible slaughters does not take place in Denmark, but on the Feroe Islands. Which, even though they are part of Denmark, have their own laws and their own system.
