End Extinctions Across Borders

Canadian borders have become a through way to numerous animal species unlawfully being trafficked to extinction. Those that trade in illegal wildlife are aware of the weaknesses in our inadequate laws, and will continue to use our borders as a means to their profit and greed, unless Canada acts today. Please sign our petition and ask that Canada tighten our borders, and protect exotic wildlife from illegal trade as food, medicine, and private ownership.http://www.facebook.com/pages/End-Extinctions-Across-Borders/151477738231297
We the undersigned call upon the Canadian government to implement stricter legislations, to govern the import and sale of all animal parts. Whether these parts are frozen, dried or in powder form, deemed for medicinal purposes or as food.

Stricter laws must include:

1. All imported animal products, whether in its natural form, powdered, dried or frozen, must declare in English, the species of animal, the country of origin, including the name and address of the importer and the date of importation.

2. The import of animal parts in bulk for the purpose of repackaging of goods for retail will not be permitted.

3. All packaging must be species specific. Mixed packaging of different species, from the same genus is prohibited.

4. All importers of shark fins must declare goods being imported do not include fins or body parts from the 3 shark species listed in Appendix 11 of CITES. This includes the Basking shark, the Whale shark and the Great White shark.

5. Penalties for those caught trading in body parts from the 3 species of sharks as listed in Appendix 11 and any animal or plants listed in Appendix 1 of CITES, should be consistent with the penalties for attempting to import any illegal narcotics.

6. Canada must introduce a 50% duty on all imported shark fins instead of the current duty free status on shark fins. Revenues would be used towards training customs officials so they may identify species at risk, and to the protection of endangered species globally.

7. Re-exports must be prohibited, so that Canada does not become a trading hub for endangered species.

The importation of animal parts, through loosely governed Canadian borders, is leading to the extinction of species critical to our Eco system, in particular sharks, tigers and rhino%u2019s. Canada must introduce tougher laws and regulations to govern the import and sale of all animal parts so that Canadians do not become partners to animal extinctions.
