Stop the human abuse in Guantanamo Bay

Guantanamo Bay is a place of useless and inhumane torture. U.S. Government officials explain that it is necessary to interrogate these suspected terrorists for the sake of stopping terrorism, but have failed in obtaining useful information and have not been able to convict more than one suspect.

As more of the truth leaks out, more people speak up against the torture methods practiced at Guantanamo Bay (it has been said that they are the same as those used in Abu Ghraib). Many articles have been written, attempting to raise awareness about the torture that occurs daily in Guantanamo. "The C.I.A. put them in charge of training interrogators in the brutal techniques, including "waterboarding," at its network of "black sites." In a statement, Mitchell and Jessen said, "We are proud of the work we have done for our country."

But more than failing to let the public know, they fail to let the detainees know what they have been convicted of and if they will get a trial. We wonder, if Guantanamo Bay is on American land, then why don't these detainees get as many rights as those convicted criminals held in American prisons?

29 countries have denounced the detention camp along with millions of American citizens. So why can't the Bush Administration admit their wrongs?

We, the undersigned, urge you to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facilities and end all unlawful U.S. detentions around the world. Over the past six years, Guantanamo has elicited numerous allegations of torture and ill-treatment, five deaths in custody, several unfavorable court decisions and only one conviction against a detainee. There has been international condemnation of the facilities and to date 1204 parliamentarians from 29 countries have signed onto Amnesty International's framework to end illegal U.S. detentions. By continuing to detain people indefinitely without trial you are placing the U.S. in defiance of international law. The detainees held at Guantanamo should be charged immediately and given a fulll and fair trial or be released unconditionally, and the facilities should be closed as a first step towards ending this chapter of U.S. history
