Stop the human abuse in Guantanamo Bay

Target:
United States Government, President Bush

Guantanamo Bay is a place of useless and inhumane torture. U.S. Government officials explain that it is necessary to interrogate these suspected terrorists for the sake of stopping terrorism, but have failed in obtaining useful information and have not been able to convict more than one suspect.

As more of the truth leaks out, more people speak up against the torture methods practiced at Guantanamo Bay (it has been said that they are the same as those used in Abu Ghraib). Many articles have been written, attempting to raise awareness about the torture that occurs daily in Guantanamo. "The C.I.A. put them in charge of training interrogators in the brutal techniques, including "waterboarding," at its network of "black sites." In a statement, Mitchell and Jessen said, "We are proud of the work we have done for our country."

But more than failing to let the public know, they fail to let the detainees know what they have been convicted of and if they will get a trial. We wonder, if Guantanamo Bay is on American land, then why don't these detainees get as many rights as those convicted criminals held in American prisons?

29 countries have denounced the detention camp along with millions of American citizens. So why can't the Bush Administration admit their wrongs?

We, the undersigned, urge you to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facilities and end all unlawful U.S. detentions around the world. Over the past six years, Guantanamo has elicited numerous allegations of torture and ill-treatment, five deaths in custody, several unfavorable court decisions and only one conviction against a detainee. There has been international condemnation of the facilities and to date 1204 parliamentarians from 29 countries have signed onto Amnesty International's framework to end illegal U.S. detentions. By continuing to detain people indefinitely without trial you are placing the U.S. in defiance of international law. The detainees held at Guantanamo should be charged immediately and given a fulll and fair trial or be released unconditionally, and the facilities should be closed as a first step towards ending this chapter of U.S. history

Good one, USA (world police)! Setting the standard for all terrorists! The rest of the world can see the hypocrisy but still your abuses continue. Perhaps if you behaved more reputably there would be less anger towards USA and less cause for terrorists to resort to extreme measures to be heard? Setting an example of fairness and human rights would be a much better approach than copying the behaviour you claim to oppose.

Torture is inhumane and against the First Amendment rights in this country. We fight wars to try to uphold these rights in foreign lands. Why are we not practicing what we preach? The "war on terror" should be fought here! Abduction and mistreatment are forms of terrorism! Furthermore, torture is not a reliable technique for obtaining information anyway.

There is NO real excuse for human abuse! The United States should be setting an example for the world by NOT abusing other humans. We should abide by the Geneva Convention and try these individuals in a swift and fair manner. How can we expect others to treat our prisoners of war fairly if we do not treat POW's fairly?

This is sickening . It needs to be stopped just as the war does . remember others will do to us as we do to them ,but above all , this is terrible and against what we the people want . Bush needs to go and his cronies also . Those of you who don;t try to stop this abuse and abuse of power need to go also ,this is not what America was started for and it is doing no one good , we;re suppose to make the world a better place and take care of each other .I hope others don't wish to be like us or the world will end .

What is going on at Guantanamo is inhumane and violates the Constitution and the principles under which the country was founded. The fact that there is a war going on is no excuse for violating basic human rights.

I am all for stopping the abuse as I am representing 2 prisoners at guantanamo but I personally think that sending this to Bush is a waste of time... maybe congressional leaders but they havent done much of anything either... There are not enough people in the US that cares about Guantanamo so massive demonstrations will never happen. I guess the only thing I can realistically hope for is a demoncratic president.... so work for your candidate during this election period (unless your candidate is McSame...) and get out there and vote these morally corrupt people out. http://gtmoblog.blogspot.com/

I don't understand how our Government thinks they can simply denounce barbaric torture and then get away with committing it every day.

To jail people this way and to them make laws to charge these people is inhuman and immoral, its unconstitutional and should be illegal,Bush should be jailed for TYRANNY.

the treatment of the Guantanamo prisons is a complete tragety. In every single aspect. Inhumane conditions that utter appalling, charges without credibility, mock trials, no respect for human decency and international laws are all ills attached to this institution which many nations and individuals are very much aware for. American is not the nation it believes it is until Guantanamo is abolished and whatever restitution that is humanly possible is give to its inmates

I don't understand how our Government thinks they can simply denounce barbaric torture and then get away with committing it every day. Just because people are suspected terrorists (note, SUSPECTED) does not mean they deserve to be put under conditions that can lead to suicide.
