We call on to Australian government to use its close relationship with the US Government to help the people of Cuba, who have been devastated by hurricanes Gustav and Ike. We have heard about the appalling damage affecting Haiti and the US Gulf Coast, but almost nothing about the massive destruction in Cuba. Seven Cubans have died and almost 1 million homes have been either wholly or partially damaged. Cuba is not asking for handouts, but for the cruel blockade to be lifted to allow the government to buy food, medicines, construction materials and components to re-establish electricity supplies.
Writing to President Bush, US Catholic Bishops said: 'At times of crisis, there are simple and basic acts of charity on which people rely. Churches, as well as governments, urge people to reach out and respond with generosity to those in desperate need. The United States has a tradition of such ass istance for which it can be rightly proud. At this time, all should be done to facilitate humanitarian assistance...Removing restrictions on remittances and travel to Cuba are a necessary step which I urge you take without delay.'
We therefore call on you to urge the US Government to - at the very least - suspend its blockade of Cuba at this particular time. We also ask you to send relief aid to Cuba as a matter of urgency. If a poor country like Cuba can manage to send 200 doctors to East Timor in a display of international generosity, then surely relatively wealthy Australia can extend a helping hand to Cuba.
We look forward to a swift and positive response to our request.

Mr. Obama, it is time for change; change of this unjust and inhumane foreign policy, which affects the life of every person in Cuba.

My boyfriends has his whole family living in Cuba and it's hard for him to see his Grandmother who he grew up with. It ridiculous he has to pay 10 dollars for ten minutes just to talk to her on the fone and u cant even hear that well. Most people haven't even been able to see their roots because the stupid embargo, only we imagine how it is in photos. Cubans and Americans alike, and it would benifit the both of us.

How would you like your freedom taken away! America is in the grips of a cosmetic surgery fad. The Cuban people can't even EAT, let a lone get a face lift. It is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. I have been to Cuba a few times now and it is heartbreaking. Everyone is starving. It's only like how the glossy brochures advertise for tourists "for tourists". The cubans don't even get the scraps!!!!

A nation's true measure is whether it can put politics second and humanity first. The blockade should be lifted and the needs of the suffering given top priority.

USA should work towards opening up to Cuba - although Cuba survives without USA! The strength of the Cuban people since the revolution has been truely inspiring. Furthermore they have also continually supported and assisted other world nations struggling either against natural disasters or more insidiously - corrupt governments.
I was 8 years old when Fidel Castro & Che Guevera became world news in their fight to free Cuba from corruption of USA and others. I have been an ardent "Castro & Cuba" fan since then and am happy that Fidel Castro continued to lead Cuba until most recently when he transferred his leadership to his brother due to ill health.
His long leadership says a lot about him and the love and respect the Cuban people have for him.
Cheers to Cuba!

The blockade of Cuba has been maintained by successive US Administrations. Cuba poses no threat to the US or to any other country.
The blockade has been maintained for purely political/ ideological reasons and as part of the US strategy to dominate all of South America.

Cuba is a sovereign nation and just because the current president of the United States of (NORTH) America cannot explain what the word sovereign means, it doesn´t excuse the criminal act(s) that are perpetrated against Cuba (and inumerable other sovereign nations). While the US(N)A has gained nothing from this blockade, Cuba has suffered immensely and yet it´s people still battle on. While the blockade should never have occured in the first place, it is high time it was lifted. The US(N)A cannot move forward into the 21st century and be considered respectable if it continues actions such as this.
HANDS OFF CUBA! NOW!!!
¡¡Hasta la Victoria, Siempre!!
