My nephew, federally convicted and sentenced to two (2), 40 year prison terms.

EQUAL SENTENCING---NO MORE 100 TO 1 RATIO

Target:
U.S. Sentencing Commission and U.S. Congress
WE, the undersigned strongly and firmly support the elimination of federal and state Crack Cocaine laws that unjustly incarcerate disproportionally minority and poor defendants for longer sentences.  For the past 23 years this injustice has been allowed to continue.  "TO THIS WE SAY NO MORE" AND  "LET MY PEOPLE GO"   NOW!!!!!!!!!

All changes in laws should and must be RETROACTIVE.  for current inmates to have their sentences reduced to reasonable and rational terms.

"We the undersigned" are aware that Equal Sentencing legislation is currently moving through the halls of Congress.  Both the House of Representatives and the Senate are working to undo the 100 to 1 ratio for powder cocaine vs crack cocaine enacted 23 years ago.  Law makers recognize the need to reverse this disparity and we (family, friends and righteous people of God) must support their efforts.  We are also advocating for the reduction of harsh sentences already in place.  We further, advocate  for any new laws to be applied retroactively, to give deserving inmates a second chance at life and freedom.

Our time spent advocating for Equal Sentencing, signing the petition, visiting/talking/emailing our loved ones, or writing our congressperson; hopefully, will not be in vain.  I was always told, "ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE", then by that token, "TOGETHER WE CAN MOVE CONGRESS TO DO THE RIGHT THING"  "YES WE CAN".

All drugs are bad but should not have harsher punishment for the same drug.

My husband was sentenced to 155 months(12yrs 7mos.) in prison. He was caught with 51 grams of crack cocaine two weeks after our son was born. I am in way saying what he did was right but I don't think that the system was designed right either. People that molest and rape women and children get less time than a convicted drug dealer. When does fair begin. My son is now six years old and only knows his father through prison walls. What impact do you think that will have on a youth? I can only teach my son so much. A boy needs a man to teach him how to be a man and unfortunately I am not. I think that the laws need to be updated.

I believe that drug use is a health as well as psychological issue. I think people that are addicted to drugs are predisposed to used like alcoholics. How can one addiction be so different from another. I believe it is so different because one drug is legal and the other is not.

I believe that drug addiction is a health issue. People who abuse drugs are also abusing their health, as well as the people around them.

i know all about this crack ratio stuff ever since my husband got arrested march 2008 and was not given a bail. he was charged with 2 sales and not more than 3.5 grams and copped to a plea of 24-30 months. if this crack ratio law is in effect it will knock off 16 months to his low end of his sentence, that means when he goes for sentending it will most ikely be time served and he will be able to come home. i cant wait for that day to come because i miss him so much, he means the world to me, he is my everything.

drug addiction os definately a health issue, not a criminal issue, it could be because of physical health or because of mental health, you never know. i go to a drug and alcohol counseling service because im diagmosed as being addicted to marijuana.... anything can happen these days.

There are alot of alot of young men in the prison system who were forced into a life of crime due to this corrupt system we call the justice system. The real criminals are not these young men its those who fund these operations. These young men are not able to buy planes, trains and transport these drugs here yet we know who has that power.

I have friends in Federal prison for life behind this law. People have committed murders and not served this much time. It is sad to see young lives wasted because of a bad choice. I believe in rehabilitation. It is more cost effective and moral than ridiculous sentences. If a person CONTINUES to offend, then a longer sentence should be enforced. My friends are serving 10 , 20 or better for a first offense.

Drug addiction is both a health and criminal issue. From one standpoint, if you can get people off the drugs and educate people so they will not make the choice to use, the demand for the drug will decrease. From the criminal point of view, if an effective penal system is used, it will deter those from selling the drug. Locking someone up for life is not the answer because there will be someone to take their place.
