Too many homeless strays in Erie being shot by police.

Erie County needs more Animal Control officers and a spay/nueter program! Stop shooting dogs!!

Target:
County Executive: Mark DiVecchio, Mayor: Joseph Sinnott, City Council Pres.: Rubye Jenkins -Husband, City Council member: Patrick Cappabiaca
The City of Erie, PA.
The City of Erie, PA.
"We the undersigned ask that Erie County employ more Animal Control officers to humanely capture stray dogs.  Having only one Animal Control officer with the working hours of 8:00AM until 4:30PM cannot properly, and humanly handle all of the calls a city the size of Erie requires. The neglect in this department has resulted in the shooting deaths of at least 10 dogs in the year 2007.  We ask that said Animal Control officers work supportingly along side with area Rescues for the benefit of the animals. We also ask that the use of a stun agent be implemented as soon as possible to allow cornered dogs to be given the chance of a complete, calm, educated evaluation of temperment. The Erie police could then concentrate their time on finding, and stopping the abusive owners who use dogs for profit in dog fighting rings that are rampant in Erie.
We also ask that elected Erie County and City Officials start a reduced cost, spay and nuetering program in Erie to help owners afford this needed surgery, and help control over population of these stray animals.
A feral cat spay/nueter release program is also needed in Erie, and we ask that this be implemented as well.

How can you expect to have control of anything with only one person on the job????

Erie needs to get a spay/neuter program for their city to try to control the pet overpopulation.

Yes I do. It will take alot of work but it is worth it for the sake of the animals.

To improve adoption process & avoid killing animals that may have found a home

Animals is this country are treated so badly it is insane. It amazes me that someone can take a puppy home, keep it until it is no longer playful and cute and then give it up to animal control. Then within a few days this former member of the family is euthanized. WHAT ?? This is soooo wrong and unacceptable. Please stop the madness. There needs to be more voices, to speak up, for the animals.

Erie needs to have a low cost spay/neuter program to lower the unwanted pet population and keep the number of euthanized pets to a minimum. One day there should be no such thing as euthanizing a family pet. No way should ANY ONE we allowed to shoot a pet.

Please take a moment to think about your animal being put down by someone shooing it in the head. How can anyone agree that this is a viable way to end an animals life. I hope Erie County adopts a better way to treat these and all animals with respect.

Adopting a reduced price for spayed and or neuterding is a responsible way to control animal population. This helps eliminate the killing of unwanted animals

I believe that it is our responsibility to care for our animals in the best possible manner. That would include having an appropriate amount of animal control officers/facilities to enforce the laws protecting our pets

I belive that people would be more likely to have their pets spayed and/or neutered if the cost were affordable.

Do you believe a large city with only one Animal Control officer can sufficiently, and correctly handle all animal calls recieved? would u have one cop, or one ambulance for a whole city to handle all the calls people have....NO! sowhy should the pets?

I believe strongly that the number of no-kill humane centers should be proportional to the size of the city. These centers will be dedicated and committed to take in city strays, care for them, finding them new homes where they will find love, warmth, dedicated attention, commitment and veterinary care. It is very important that the city should implement a humane animal care control, employing responsible individuals dedicated to caring for animals, spaying, neutering and the appropriate veterinary care. Euthanasia is only a last option. Shooting a dog is inhumane, cruel, wrong and barbaric.

Low cost spaying and neutering, particularly for those families of low income should be available in all cities. This will encourage residents to have their animals spayed and neutered, this would result in less offspring, thus reducing the number of strays in the city. Please offer low cost spay and neutering and implement a comprehensive program of educating your residents on the benefits of spaying and neutering and responsible animal care.

I believe the city needs to implement an animal care and control unit that employs several people to be responsible for taking in animals. One person in a large city cannot possibly be responsible for the intake of the city's strays. If more people are employed then there will be a greater number of people to find and take in the animals and to humanely euthanize them. Putting a gun to a dogs head to kill him/her is inhumane and cruel and just plain wrong!

If the city starts to offer a low cost spray and neuter program, then the residents will have their animals spayed and neutered. Spay and neutered dogs cannot produce offspring. Less offspring means less strays. Please offer a low cost spray ans neuter program and educate your residents on the benefits of having their animals sprayed and neutered.

Something needs to be done. You need to get more help for these animals! Please do something!!!!!!!!!

It is important that you have some sort of low cost animal neuter program for the low income families. Everyone needs help now a days. This will at least reduce the animal population. Do somthing!

Please provide the necessary resources and manpower to provide the most humanitarian care of your city's animals. In our society, animals are too quickly thought of as disposable property. Despite their inability to protect their rights, they have the capacity to understand and feel cruelty; they also have the ability to appreciate kindness and empathy. Please hire the necessary staff members to provide the hands of kindness and humanity to protect the animals.

no way - too much work for one person to tackle

there are shelters all over the counrty that are overcrowded. please spay/neuter more animals to help slow down the overcrowding problem.

Animal control should be considered a vital branch of city government and funding should be allotted accordingly. If the workload is too much for one officer to handle, then rather than allowing citizens to deal with problems as they see fit it is the government's responsbility to hire more officers so that these matters can be humanely and safely dealth with.

Low cost spay and neuter programs benefit everyone. In the not so distant future, it will ultimately save everyone money, including and especially, the city because of fewer animals in need of care.

what are you people thinking? one control officer is just not enough, there are thousands of homeless and abused animals in this country how can only one person do the job of many? If its a matter of money then cut back on the raises of the government employees and the city council and hire the persons to do what need to be done...would you hire just one police officer for an entire city, i think not..animals also need our help they have no recourse but to fight back when someone is abusing them or run away and find shelter so .......get off your duffs and do the right thing get a full time staff for such a big city to control what is happening in your town to the helpless animals....

If you give a reduced rate to spay or neuter the animals owners get happier animals who do not reproduce at a rapid rate and then shut down puppy mills.

If people really have hearts in the town, then they should help the pets that are going through this and take action. Its not the animals fault it was born nor that no one will take care of it. What if it was like that with humans. Just think about it. No one has a right to take another living's life.

YES, its important for all towns and cities. no matter where you go you will always see a stray or house dog roaming the streets because its homeless or lost. its not its fault it cant take care of its self and relys on us for shelter and food. Alot of animals love us but we as stubboorn humans dont see that. I hate people who hurt animals for no reason. May god do something for these animals and purt a heat in pople..

No I don't believe that 1 animal control officer can handle a big city. That is what the animal abusers count on. 1 man can't be every where, all of the time. If the city's budget won't handle paying more than one, the deputize volunteers to help. If they had a volunteer program to help end animal abuse in my area, and I was deputized, I would be these creeps worst nightmare. I have been pushing for something like this in Ohio and am hitting a brick wall. I am not quitting and if more people pushed for it then maybe it could be a reality!

Erie officials should adopt a reduced price for spaying/neutering for its residents because in this day and age where a lot of people are up against it money wise, this is only fair. There are alot of people who want to spay and neuter and can't afford to do so. There is an organization in my area called "CHAIN", were they help people spay and neuter their animals based on thier income. I had 3 babies spayed for $25.00 each. My Husband was barely working at the time. It helped out alot. Maybe more animals would be spayed and neutered if they could go through an organization like that.

I can't even stomach the thought that this actually aoccurs! Imagine getting your head blown up at close range like this poor animals suffer through?!!! If it's inhumane for humans to do this upon e/o, why is it permissable with animals? They feel and hurt like we do. Anybody can say otherwise, but it's true. I don't know how these people can sleep at night? Goodluck! xo

this is 2008 Animals have rights too. We use them constantly to our own needs. We owe them some respect and compassion.

The cost of over population is a burden to every county in the U.S. with reduced rate spay/ neuter programs the county and there fore the tax paying people will save money in the long run, open your eyes and look at the numbers, do the math.

So there are less homeless animals and less animals that are neglected or not cared for properly.

Get with the times, people! The lack of animal control with budgeting only one officer, no spay/neuter programs makes your city look like there's no higher education than that of a dog running Erie's government. If dog fighting is rampant, someone needs to be in control of Erie citizens and there must be more problems than what a few more animal control officers will take care of. I'm not interested in visiting or passing through your city.

No there must be a force of these officers to maintain a well educated population of animal owners and others who live in the city. Also to maintain a population of healthy animals

So that unwanted puppies are not left on thier own adding to the problem of strays
