Evanston Elementary School Hours

Evanston Elementary School Hours

Target:
Evanston/Skokie School District 65
Sponsored by:

We the undersigned urge Evanston/Skokie School District 65 to postpone its decision to change the start and dismissal times for Lincoln, Lincolnwood, and Oakton schools beginning in September 2008.

While we fully support the District's goals of consistency and equity in professional development for teachers, we believe that the school schedule should also be responsive to the needs of students and their families. Therefore, we ask that this matter be brought before the D65 School Board so that there can be a thorough public discussion of its impact and an opportunity for parents, guardians and other concerned community members to share their views and suggestions.

We thank you for your time and consideration of this request.

If nothing can be done this year, please consider an earlier start time for next year. This is a great harship for working families.

It is unfortunate that this decision was made in a vacuum. Interesting how families of children selected for Magnet schools will not have to bear the extra financial burden the rest of the families will now have. Most have budgeted for after care but now we have to pay for before care too. Seems like an unfair way to "maintain consistency". Absolutley ridiculous and disheartening. Makes me wonder why I work so hard and pay such high taxes to live in Evanston - supposedly for the great district education services that I now have to pay even more for.

This will be something that will not benefit the community.

I am very upset about the time change. Evanston is a town of working people. Many of them like myself is a single, hardworking parent who is expected to be at work at 8:30am. I am already paying $215 a month for one child in an after school program. I cannot afford before school child care. It is the taxpaying citizens of Evanston that pay for the district so we should have had a say in a major decision such as this one. I have personally met Mr. Murphy and I told him that my son (at the time) went to a private school and he was quick to persuad me to select D65. I cant beleive he would tell people, to go to a private school, if we do not like his decision. I know Mr. Murphy has kids but does he have kids in D65 now? Because if he did, I think he would have made a different decision.

It's amazing how such an otherwise progressive group of educators could come to such a draconian decision which clearly has multiple negative effects to the working families of the district. I seriously advise D65 parents/citizens to use this particular situation as a wakeup call to become more involved in the local elections which select school board members. These elected officials need to become more accountable to their constituents.

Those who have taken decision, I am sure sometime you were or are going to be parents. Just put yourself into the shoes of the parents and think about the difficulties they are going to face. Not all of them have flexible time where they are allowed by the employer to come late so that they can take care of their kid. Please be considerate and do the right thing, go back to the old timing. Thanks Sreedevi

We need a voice in this decision. Please reconsider your position as this changes many things for many families. I am a school teacher in a district nearby. I will now have to put my children in care before school because of this change.

As a parent and teacher in District 65, this schedule is going to cause a lot of problems in my family's scheduling. I am no longer able to pick up or drop off my children all year. I will need child care before and after school. As a teacher, I am very concerned for all the scheduling problems that will occur at Lincoln. There are many working parents who will no longer be able to take their children to school. Will they make themselves breakfast and walk alone?

Please postpone this decision until we, the parents of children at the affected schools, have had a chance to weigh-in on this decision. I for one am opposed to the schedule change, but would like to hear what others have to say. Sincerely, David Ivey

I am a single parent. When my son starts school in two years, a start time of 9:00 would create a hardship in our household. I strongly urge you to reconsider this schedule change. Such a late start time can only work well for families who have a stay-at-home parent!

We have a two physician household and have early patient care responsibilities. This sudden change in start times will adversely affect our family. Please reconsider changing back to the previous start time.

I am very concerned about the time change. I would just list number of factors that will have a negative impact on our children and family: 1. Financially - as a single parent such a change will hit out family drastically. 2. Limited contact with teachers, parents and students - everyone knows how important is to be invlolved in your children school, friends and community. Also, limited family time during the morning – very important issue – 40 extra minutes e day are almost 2 ½ hours a week that all of us working families will loose. 3. Shorten the afternoon child care time which is the time for school homework, free activities and play. 4. Limiting after school activities some of the programs start at 3 or 3:30pm. 5. Elementary and preschool start at 9am if you a single parent with two or more children - how can you possibly be in two places at the same time? Either way one of the children will be late for school. 6. iF a kindergarten is up at 6:30am, what would be at 3:30pm exhaustitng 7. What are the options for accommodating the time change? - Increase child care enrollment and lower the cost - (currently only 50 spots available at Lincoln School – and families in need would be much more than 100? I really hope d65 reconsidere this decision.

Regardless of the final decision that needs to be made, an open discussion with parents, staff, and the administration is the best approach to any dramatic change such as this.

Why were families NOT notified of this possible change?!? I am a single mother and have a hard time coordinating getting my daughter to and from school. She is also enrolled in aftercare. How will this affect the cost? Will they stay open until 6:30 again or will prices decrease? I think that it's unfortunate that the ones who are involved with the changes (the families) were the only one who were NOT involved with the decision making. Plain and simply.....it's just wrong!!!!!!!!

Once again Hardy Murphy and company are completely disregarding the interests of the families of Dist. 65........if anything, starting time should be 8:00. 9:00 is unacceptable for working parents and will create scheduling problems and added monetary expenses for child-care. It also will create problems for families who have regularly scheduled after-school activities.

This change requires me to find childcare that would not have been necessary under the current schedule. If arrangements cannot be made with family and/or other parents to assist, I will be facing large, unexpected costs. Siobhan Wee, Oakton Elementary School

As a parent and taxpayer I believe parents should have had SOME voice in this decision.
# 163:

I think that the parents should have a strong impact on the decision making of the school hours. Those hours would make a drastic and horrific change in the households of these children. Especially the working parents.

School hours have a huge impact on family life, especially if there is not a stay at home parent. To change these hours w/o consideration of families of affected school children is not good policy. Perhaps hours at all District 65 schools should be revisited. Many children at K-5 level are picked up or taken to school by middle school aged kids. Changing the hours with no family input is ill advised.
# 160:

I urge D65 Administration to respect students and families by carefully reviewing all issues with a view toward a start time of approximately 8:30am.

I HAVE NIECES AND NEPHEWS ATTENDING OAKTON AND VERY SOON MY TWO GIRLS WILL TOO. IT IS HARD ENOUGH MAKING ARRANGEMENTS FOR 8:20 MUCH LESS 9AM. PLEASE MANY OF US WONT HAVE JOBS TO GO TO IF THIS ISSUE IS PASSED. HELP US OUT HERE.

Although I no longer have elementary age children and won't be impacted by the start time change, I feel that a change like this merits discussion and imput from families.

I understand the need for uniformity, but I wish the schedule would be moved earlier, rather than later for some schools. It becomes more difficult to timely get to downtown jobs the later you go.
# 153:
2:11 pm PDT, Jun 9, Sharon Meyers, Illinois
Please reconsider changing the school hours, as the new timing does not benefit the students, their parents or the community.

If anything, I'd rather that Oakton started at 8:00.
