Fair Wages for Massachusetts Wait-Staff

Target:
Massachusetts Law Makers
Sponsored by:

Currently the hourly wage for Massachusetts waiters and waitresses is $2.63 per hour.  We haven't had a raise in years, yet the cost of living has drastically increased.  People love going out to eat, and still do, however, because of the increase in gas, food cost, and overall entertainment expenses have risen, they are tipping their waiters and waitress significantly less than the 15 - 18 %.  This results in a significant wage loss in the wait-staffs pockets, and all the while, they have the same cost of living increases as everyone else.

I'd like to see an hourly wage increase to $5.00 an hour, plus our tips.  Connecticut and New York states wait-staff hourly wages are $7.00 per hour, plus they get tips!!  Customers don't realize we only make $2.63 an hour.

Please consider changing the law.  I have 4 children, and the cost of living in Massachusetts is getting outrageous.

Thank you.

The economy is horrible, people are cutting back on everything including tips and dining out in general. In Massachusetts I am required to have health insurance, and at $2.63 per hour, that goes to try to cover my health insurance contribution, leaving little left to pay my federal and state taxes. $2,63 does not go far at all and with fewer tips, how are we expected to survive ?

Minimum wage in Masssachusetts has gone up significantly in the past few years to almost 8:00 per hour. Yet, Restaurant workers are still getting paid the same $2.63 as when I started 21 years ago. Customers are making tough choices about how best to spend their money. Most people think minimum wage means that everyone gets at least that much per hour. If they assume we get an $8:00 minimum wage they cut back on tipping. They think of it more as a reward than a badly needed paycheck. While the Consumer's pay goes up through cost of living raises ours goes down because Lobbyists in state government work hard to maintain maximum profits for their industry. It’s time we do something about this archaic way of thinking?

I believe the petition very well reprsents the (even) patient and persistent actions of the workers. All must escalate until it's finally recognized that they do deserve this increas and are serious about demanding it. I applaud their attitude and I ask you please to consider it carefully and conscientiously in both your heart and your mind. Thank you for your time and consideration in your busy position.

$2.63/hr. Is an outrageous wage with the pressures and stress of the food service industry! The majority of waitstaff and servers are college students making a living and paying school loans and expenses in order to integrate themselves into the community. If the employees are college students educating themselves to better service the community shouldn't the community better service them? Shouldn't Massachusetts help their students?

Are you kidding me? I earned more than $2.63 hr. in the late 1960's. Give these people a significant raise.

Waiting tables in Texas, I used to make $2.13 an hour plus tips, but I was lucky to have had extremely appreciative customers who tipped well. Now I work in a gym and make more than six dollars an hour. Those in the service industry absolutely deserve a raise for everything they do!
