Families Against Unfair Laws

The FDA Globalization Act of 2008 would force small and family owned businesses to pay up to $12,000 a year in unfair business registration fees and require the filing of burdensome paperwork which would put them out of business.

At a time when families are flexing their creative muscle to launch new businesses so they can keep upt with the rising cost of everything from fuel to eggs, milk and bread, this legislation comes along to sabatoge their best efforts.

Here are a few reasons why this legislation is bad:

1. It would impose an annual registration fee of up to $12,000 for each company. This would create a massive barrier to entry, eliminating any chance that small and family owned businesses could launch cosmetics companies.

2. Even if companies could pay the fee, the filing and registration paperwork would easily and quickly overwhelm them. Not only would they have to register their companies, but they would also have to register each and every product they make, plus register each and every ingredient in each product.

This means that each time a new ingredient was added or removed, paperwork would have to be filed with the federal government.

3. If the first two regulatory hurdles were not enough, companies would also have to become psychics and be able to report "anticipated adverse events" with respect to their cosmetics products.

 - If you are a customer of a small cosmetics company that makes products you have come to enjoy -- products you can't get at nationwide department and big box stores -- you owe it to yourself to sign this petition opposing this draft legislation.

 - If you are an Indie business owner in any industry, you are not safe either! Larger businesses in your industry would love to convince Congress to pass legislation that would create an unlevel playing field that would simply paperwork and fee you to death, legislating you right out of business.
