FDA: Ban the use of growth hormone Posilac

  • by: Melissa Duchan
  • recipient: US Food and Drug Administration-Commissioner Dr. Hamburg
The artificial growth hormone under the brand name Posilac, originally formulated by corporate giant Monsanto from genetically engineered E.coli bacterium, is used to induce dairy cows to produce more milk. The chemical has been banned by every industrialized nation excluding the US and Mexico, and with more people trying to live a healthy and environmentally responsible lifestyle, the time has come for it to be banned in America as well. The FDA claimed in 1990 to have proven that the chemical is safe through experiments on rats, but this experiment was later shown by Health Canada to have had major scientific errors. Milk produced by cows injected with the hormone has high levels of IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor-1) , a chemical produced naturally by the human body and therefore readily accepted by it. Because of its similarity to insulin, this chemical can cause low blood sugar. But the side effects do not end there. IGF-1 can also aggravate existing tumors (ones that had already developed into cancer) or even trigger cancer, especially in people who have a higher cancer risk due to genetics and family history. Posilac can also make cows more susceptible to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease), a neurological disorder that in severe cases can be transmitted to humans. The FDA's charge is to protect public health and we the people should call upon it do so, as has Canada, the UKGermany and many other nations. Kids were always told that milk is the most healthy beverage, and it should not come with added and unnecessary health risks due to greed.

Dear Dr. Hamburg,

We the undersigned respectfully request that you ban the use of hormone Posilac in dairy cows.

The FDA's charge is to protect public health and we the undersigned are calling upon it to do so, as has Canada, the UK, Germany and many other nations. We appreciate that you have taken the time to read this letter and we hope that you will do everything in your power to end the use of this harmful chemical.
