THE VIAGRA BILL
The issue I would like to address at the federal level is the constant advertising by pharmaceutical companies to promote erectile dysfunction products, such as Viagra, and Cialis. The position that I have taken is one of direct opposition against this type of advertising. These advertisements are shown throughout the day with little to no regard to the viewing audience, particularly children. Adults also consider them offensive and distasteful. However, the target audience that I am most concerned about is children. My position is that ED advertisements are not suitable for them and should not be aired until after 10PM, which is typically considered adult viewing time.
I chose this issue because I think that we need to protect the innocence of our children. It is important that children stay children for as long as they can. Is it really necessary for them to be exposed to advertising of this nature? How about exercising a little discretion, and addressing this matter privately with a physician. However, in today%u2019s society nothing is sacred and privacy is almost unheard of. Adult medical issues should not be addressed in the presence of children, and ED advertisements do just that. It is time to take a stand against this type of advertising.
Rep. Jim Moran has recently advocated for the Viagra Bill, which stipulates that that ED advertisements cannot be aired between the hours of 6AM and 10PM. This bill is designed to protect children during the prime viewing hours of the day. I feel that the senators from Massachusetts should support this bill, and join forces with Rep. Moran to pass legislation that clearly draws lines, redefines the rules, and protects our nation%u2019s greatest asset, our children.
