Don't Let Cows Eat Poop!

Don't Let Cows Eat Poop!

Target:
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
We need your help to end the dirty, disgusting and inhumane practice of feeding poultry manure to cows.  Sign FACT's petition urging the FDA to ban this practice!

Background

Would you feed animal waste to your dog or cat?  Probably not. It's dirty, disgusting and intuitively just seems wrong. Unfortunately, not all animals are so lucky.  In areas of the United States where large cattle and poultry operations coexist, chicken waste (or, more accurately, 'poultry litter') is routinely fed to cows.  Poultry litter consists primarily of manure, feathers, spilled feed and bedding material that accumulate on the floors of the buildings that chickens and turkeys.  It can contain disease-causing bacteria, antibiotics, toxic heavy metals, substances that cause Mad Cow Disease, and even foreign objects such as dead rodents, rocks, nails and glass.

Surprisingly, this unhealthy and inhumane practice is legal and poorly monitored -- creating unacceptable risks to human and animal health. The FDA needs to ban the use of animal waste as animal feed before human and animal health is further compromised.  For more information, check out http://www.filthyfeed.org/.

Many prominent groups have endorsed our efforts to elicit an FDA ban on feeding poultry litter to cattle, including:

Center for Food Safety

Center for Science in the Public Interest

Consumer Federation of America

Consumers Union

Food & Water Watch

Humane Society of the United States

Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy

We the undersigned strongly urge the Agency to immediately ban the use of poultry litter as cattle feed.

In the United States, poultry legally can be fed ruminant meat and bone meal, which may contain infectious prions that are responsible for serious neurological diseases.  When this poultry litter is fed back to cattle, the cows are at risk of contracting Mad Cow Disease.  Humans who eat contaminated beef products are at risk for variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a degenerative and often fatal neurological disease.  Feeding poultry litter to cattle carries other serious health risks as well, including those related to: (1) disease-causing bacteria and viruses; (2) drug residues; (3) antibiotic resistant bacteria; and (4) heavy metals and other toxic substances.

The practice of feeding poultry litter to cattle continues today without adequate surveillance or regulation.  With so much at stake, the federal government no longer can afford to turn a blind eye to dangers posed by filthy cattle feed.

In the interest of human and animal health, we urge the Agency to act in a timely manner and ban the feeding of poultry litter to cows. Thank you for taking immediate steps to address this serious threat to our nation's health.

We need to respect our animals, just as we need to respect other human beings. Feeding a cow chicken feces is not only a sign of disrespect for them, but also for the people who may end up eating that cow. I choose not to eat meat, but that is a personal decision that not everyone chooses. However, ALL consumers should be able to choose if they want their cattle to be fed POOP. And this is just an assumption, but I would say the majority of them do not appreciate what is currently going on. And seriously, FDA - DO YOUR JOB!

As a both an animal lover and a generally compassionate human being, I am absolutely disgusted that these animals are being forced to feed these various hazardous materials. It is a sad commentary on how we as a society are treating animals when something like this is "standard". Please reconsider what you're doing because animals simply deserve better. I think, as a civilized society we should be reaching that realization much more progressively.

To feed bacteria, viruses, and fungi to cows is leading to sure disaster for the milk that is being produced and for the cows themselves. No food animal should be fed manure! It is also ridiculous to feed antibiotics to cows after they get sick from chicken excrement. Antibiotics simply go into the milk and result in resistant bacteria in the humans that drink that milk. This nonsense needs to stop now!

This is how horrible diseases are passed from one species to another.. and it's totally unacceptable and disgusting. How would you like to be fed that? You wouldn't like it very much, so treat all animals how you would like to be treated.. Didn't your mother ever teach you anything?

I can not believe that some one responsible for the well-fare of cows would not some time ago would have kind of wondered if feeding them the chicken and turkey waste was a good idea or a bad idea. I have finally realized there are a lot of uncaring and stupid people in the meat business. I wonder what they put on there dining -room table to eat themselves!

I just want to state that I feel rendering animals and feeding them to other animals is completely unethical and inexcusable. There is no need. Let the animals graze in grass lots. This practice is more sustainable, less likely to spread disease, and better for the health of both the animal and the earth.

Our farms need to raise food animals without antibiotics and in humane, natural environments. The red tape certification paperwork/documents that are needed for mega farms should be eliminated for small sustainable farms.

This is downright disgusting. Why would a nation condone businesses that feed the populace with meat that has as much nutrition as chicken poop? If this is going to be allowed, shouldn't the consumer know the animal's diet? Whether the animal was raised on corn, wheat, or chicken feces, the consumer should have the knowledge at hand of what the meat was nourished from. Just like the list of ingredients on any other product, why not do that for meat?

Cows are here to enjoy life just as WE are ! ! Don't eat cows and don't feed them crap. They would like to eat their correct food just as it would be best for US to do.

I can't believe that the FDA actually banned this practice in the 60s and then overturned their ban. Obviously we have much more scientific data to support the fact that this practice is extremely dangerous to people, not to mention the fact that it is inhumane and absolutely disgusting for animals.

lest it be forgotten that the feeding of chicken manure to sheep in Britain caused scrapie and the feeding of dead animals to herbivores caused mad cow`disease - it is an insane as well as immoral practise.

This is a disgusting act of greed, ignorance, and lack of respect for people and animals. What kind of person goes to such lengths to make an extra dollar? What kind of government allows this to go on? Does the government no care for its people? Do these greedy business men not have children who are consuming these products? How ignorant do you have to be not to realize what a horrific impact they are having on animals and people? We should lock all you people up that are responsible for these atrocities and put you all on a manure diet for a couple of years. Maybe that'll teach you.
