The Orange County Register prides itself on holding public officials and others accountable for their actions, as they should. But then their own sports columnist Mark Whicker wrote this despicable column belittling the rape and kidnapping of 11-year Jaycee Dugard: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/world-won-most-2555260-never-one No reprimand. No suspension. No firing. Just business as usual and a few insincere apologies. In fact, Whicker was back writing his poorly conceived columns just a few days later. It's time for OC Register readers to turn the tables and demand accountability for those responsible for the publication of this insensitive and offensive column. If you find this column offensive and think Mark Whicker and his editors should be held accountable for its publication, sign the petition.

How would you feel if that had been your sister or daughter that was kidnapped and raped? Would you have made the same stupid comments? How do you think Jaycee felt when she read or heard what you had written or you just don't care? She was brutalized for 18 years and all you can think to do is make fun of it.What an ASS you are!!!

This is the problem. The media, the newspapers, the radio jocks, the photographers, the cops, have never had any respect for another's privacy....When are they going to realize that sensationalism is not the way to go in order to make a buck off of someone else's demise????

I'm not saying there was sanything positive about the column. It was pretty moronic and certainly insensitive, but why the witch hunt? It would be different if this guy regularly did stupid stuff, but one error in judgment in 22 years and he should lose his job? So none of you have ever made a mistake on the job? That makes all nine people (wow, the outrage is palpable. Wait, it's EIGHT people. I just scrolled down and saw some dolt signed it twice. Nice job, Jack Beardsley.) who have signed this petition a small mass of hypocritical assholes.

The horrible insensitivity that this "journalist" put forth in the aforementioned article is beyond anything that I have ever read in any paper anywhere. Why is this poor example of a human still employed by the OC Register

I sign this petition respectfully. But his column was not only unprofessional but insensitive, derrogatory, and worst of all a cruel attempt to have some fun with an absolute attrocity to someone else. Welcoming her back from "the yard". That alone was enough to make this column insane. The reality is people have lost jobs for shorter and more sensitive outbursts than this. Because of the medium being in print and being on the OC register doesnt make it less of a outrageous and unprofessional act. If these comments were on national radio he would be on the cover of his own paper, and would have been fired. I sign this because I do not think its fair that simply because of the smaller audience and the medium in which this outrage was done should insulate him from punishment that would normally have already been given. The editor is just as equal in blame and should be fired too. The article was not funny though attempting to be, not appropriate, disgusting, and an offense to human decency. Im sorry, youve been kept in darkness for 18 years, raped, and brutalized. But hey heres what i believe the funny things are that uv missed in sports! O and by the way welcome out of the yard. Can a "professional" newspaper and its writers really get no reprecussions from printing the most inflamitory article in sports history just because it is not on the radio or in sports illustrated?
