The story about Suzanne Lukas denying Justin Denney, a student, his high school diploma for simply bowing and blowing a kiss to his mother is absolutely horrendous, and it's something that Ms. Lukas should not have done. Ms. Lukas claims that Justin was "fooling around" when it's blatantly obvious that he wasn't in any way, shape, or form. There's no doubt that this action by Ms. Lukas has outraged every single person who has read the story, as is evident by the numerous comments left on an untold number of websites showing support for Justin. Ms. Lukas had absolutely no right to deny Justin his diploma for bowing and blowing a kiss to his mother, and her actions no doubt prove that she is completely unfit to be a school superintendent. This petition is calling for Ms. Lukas's immediate removal from her position as we, the American public and people who have heard this terrible story, feel that anyone who exhibits the kind of unnecessary behavior that Ms. Lukas did towards Justin doesn't deserve to be a school superintendent, much less any kind of school employee whatsoever.

Suzanne Lukas should be ashamed of herself.

I grew up in Maine, and can remember what it was like to be subjected to those who abuse their authority in the "small pond". In an age where students have become the target of advertisers, drug pushers, and gun-toting classmates, if a student resists all these dangers and distractions, stays in school, does the work, and makes it to graduation, he should not be humiliated by a petty tyrant.

Before I even read the article on Yahoo, I said half jokingly to myself "Sounds like something that would happen at Bonny Eagle High School!" Sadly, I was right. Ms. Lukas should be removed from her position for a variety of reasons; her obvious disrespect for students, her lack of judgment and sensitivity, and her blatant abuse of power. I'm a resident of the SAD 6 School District and I am appalled that my tax dollars are paying her salary. On June 22, at a public meeting hosted by the school board, a gentleman voiced his concern that the already deflated property values in this school district could be further deflated due to the negative public perception generated by this incident. Let's face it, if I had school age children, I would not want them to be educated in this district. The gentleman's concern was summarily dismissed by the moderator, but I felt that he raised a genuine and very valid issue. Ms. Lukas should at the very least extend a public apology to young Mr. Denney as well as to the entire class and their families. She should be held accountable for her actions. And, yes, she should resign. If she refuses to resign, she should be removed from her position.

This is beyond stupid and yet I care about it because I care about the student. I have a relative the same age who wholeheartedly graduated and probably didn't act prestigious at the ceremony the whole time and I don't know why she should have. Why is it such a big deal if teenagers have fun at their graduation ceremony? Get perspective fast please!

School systems really need to remember that their job is to educate children and discipline comes from parents. This is clearly a case of a school system employee being a bully!!! She needs to grow up and remember she is there to serve-not be served. If she wants respect she needs to earn it-not demand it. Treat others with respect and you will be treated likewise!

I want this mentally incompetant woman removed from her position before she does any more harm to students and causes major lawsuits per your school and county. I truly believe she has some mental issues. She does not need to be in this position at all. I will go even further to state she does not need to be in the educational field where she has no clue what she is doing wrong. Not be around students at all!!

This is an outrage and just shows the amount of true and unusual harrassment and abuse students receive at school. Suzanne Lukas is a shining example of a member of a school faculty that holds herself above the student body not as an administrator but as lawless tyrant. She clearly does respect the underlying meaning of graduation as the first step in a young adults life, regardless of what other students were doing be it blowing up beach balls, playing with beach balls or being rowdy. Any administrator anywhere has been in a school function, assembly or activity where things can reach a point where a line is crossed. But there was no infraction on Justin Denney's part; he did nothing wrong and he did not respond in a negative way that would make me feel in anyway sympathetic or understanding toward Suzanne Lukas. Justin Denney was the true adult that day. Suzanne Lukas clearly has no respect for the students she, not controls, but authoritizes and should be fired immediately.

Suzanne should be fired. It's obvious through her actions that she isn't cut out to be the schools superintendent. There isn't anything wrong with a student showing affection for his or her mother.

To Mrs. Lukas,
Put yourself in this graduate's postion. How would you feel if after so much discipline effort and time you have put into building a successful education and making your family proud, and on tht final day, the day were you have your family friends (loved ones) and as you bow to thank your mother for all her support, you get that dream ripped from your hands and have to put your college education on hold because an "official" felt you were being 'disrespectful'
Think about it, are you seriously going to take away this young mans dream over a simple gesture he did during the biggest day of his life.. c'mon he was excited, 'grotesque' or not he' done with school, you don't have to see him ever again, just give him a chance to flourish into the successful young man you have educated for eighteen years..

School Superintendent Suzanne Lukas should be required to take sensevity therapy, and the School Committee should reconsider Ms. Lukas' position when her contract is up for renewal. !!!

Suzanne Lukas should be fired for what she did. I don't think she respects her own mother at all, or she would have seen that no harm was intended by the student in such a move.

Silly me. I thought graduation ceremonies were for the benefit and celebration of the graduates, not for the pleasure and glorification of the school officials. Too bad Suzanne Lukas did not lose her $80,000 a year job in the colsolidation. Her self importance should disqualify her from any job in the public sector.

She should not of done that to Justin Denny...He worked his butt off for 12 years to get his diploma and she denied it for bow and blowing a kiss to his mother... This is high school not the marines or anything like it...I also saw another kid that bowed and waved and she didn't deny his diploma..this is harsh and unfair treatment...This has been blown way out of proportion...

We need common sense rules for graduation and let the punishment fit the crime. All young people that complete the requirements should receive their diploma and that should be in the rules no matter what their behavior. It is not contingent upon behavior, but classwork and credits done & received. Graduation should be lightened up, it's supposed to be a happy time and just tell me what is wrong with that anyway.

Graduation day is supposed to be a joyous occasion. I think the administrators were confusing "dignified" with "somber." You cannot take your frustrations out on students if you don't clearly state in the contract what is considered as "bad behavior." More specifically, you can't take your anger out on a student who had nothing to do with the supposed "fooling around." I mean, are you kidding me? Denying a student his diploma, which he worked hard towards for four years because he was respectfully displaying his excitement? A student who only pulled out a necklace which represented YOUR school? A student who represented YOUR school wonderfully in sports, and this is how you repay him, by humiliating him? What he did didn't outshine the person walking on stage after him, and he wasn't being loud. Mrs. Lukas made more of a disruption in sending Denney back to his seat than the actual "infraction" in the first place. I do believe Mrs. Lukas needs to rid herself of this militant mentality she currently has and take time to get her priorities straight.

There are thousands of bad teachers out there manipulating and over-disciplining our youth in some kind of sick retaliation for their own unpopular childhoods. One by one these cancerous stains on our communities must be reomoved. A good teacher is patient and kind, Superintendant Lukas is clearly bitter and intolerant.

Justin was right: He earned his diploma, and he should have gotten it. Ms. Lukas's actions were appalling. Surely the school district can find someone else to be superintendent.
