Vote for Fireworks Ban Choice

Target:
King County Council
Sponsored by:
This is a petition to the King County Council asking for reconsideration of an ordinance change which would permit neighborhoods (fire protection districts) in unincorporated King County to create "no fireworks" zones. The current situation is that cities have the right to decide whether or not to allow fireworks on Independence Day, but unincorporated areas do not. The goal of this petition is to give neighborhoods local control through a voting process. If the ordinance is approved, it will take at least 10 petition signatures from elector-residents of each voting precinct within the boundaries of the no fireworks zone to set the issue for hearing. If approved, it will take one year before a ban can take effect. Do you support the right to choose whether or not to ban fireworks in unincorporated King County Fire Districts?

We, the undersigned, wish to have the right to choose whether or not to allow fireworks on Independence Day in our Fire Districts in unincorporated King County.

neighbor almost had a fire on his lawn when some 50 revellers from other neighborhoods blocked our street shooting off fireworks all nights. Time to clain back our neighborhoods. Nobody bothers to clean up their mess afterwards. Year after year it's the same.

I agree with the ordinance to ban fireworks in the Skyway area. Since there are too many people who cannot use them responsibly, including cleaning up the street afterwards, it's time for a ban. Plus, I'm tired of picking debris up that lands in my yard, and it worries me that some of that debris may cause a fire on my property some day!

I feel it is fair to allow citizens in unincorporated King County the opportunity to vote on allowing fireworks by fire district. Living in one of the unincorporated areas of King county, I can attest that many people come into our neighborhoods from surrounding cities to light fireworks. This causes not only a higher fire danger to our neighborhoods but also a strain on the king county fire departments operating in these unincorporated areas.

I think each area should get to choose to allow or ban fireworks.

When I first moved into the neighborhood, I was shocked at the amount of fireworks in the neighborhood and the disregard for firing them off at or into yards and at homes. Also, the people using fireworks do not seem to clean up their mess, which, of course, is not on their property!

Residents of any neighborhood should have the ability to make a choice on fireworks. I urge the County Council to give the residents of unincorporated King County the right to decide.

The Skycrest neighborhood is a unincorporated island, surrounded by incorporated cities (Seattle, Tukwila, Renton). They all ban fireworks, and we should have the right to also. Ernie Priestley

As a retired King County Fire District 20 career member, I am very much in favor of this fireworks ban!!! Would like it to include all unincorporated area within King County that enforcement & citizens would therefor know the legal use and/or when. Let's finally get this passed, after the long talks over the past years. Thanks...

Past years have shown that permitting fireworks on and around the 4th of July in the Skyway/West Hill area is problematic, in that people from neighboring communities are drawn into the area, increasing crowds and conflicts that our already limited law enforcement personnel are required to respond to. Additionally, many irresponsible revelers don't take the necessary cautions when setting off their fireworks and they leave large amounts of discharged fireworks and garbage that our responsible neighbors and community are left to clean up. For these reasons and for the overall safety of the community and our homes, I strongly recommend the council pass this ordinance to give us control on a No Fireworks zone.

Last year we were not home during the fourth of July weekend. When we returned we found out that our drive way was used to shot off fireworks which in return caused some damage to the side of our house (apparently some of the fire works were like paintball pellets). It could have caused a lot more damage and we were fortunate that it didn't. I believe that by banning fireworks in my neighborhood, it will increase the safety of my home and others. I urge the council to pass this ordinance to ban fireworks in the Skyway/West Hill neighborhood.

I believe that my neighborhood, West Hill/Skyway, is now more dangerous on the 4th of July because the surrounding municipalities have banned fireworks. Unfortunately, that means that significant numbers of out of area residents show up on the 4th to use legal and illegal fireworks without regard to area standards of courtesy, civility and safety. I urge the council to consider and pass the ordinance to provide local control of fireworks.
