US Congress
Sponsored by:

We're asking Congress to dedicate at least 5% of the proposed $500-700 billion economic stimulus package to support digital infrastructure and innovation.

The situation

  • President-elect Barack Obama has asked Congress to create a public works bill to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
  • Continued leadership in digital is essential for America to continue to be leaders in the global economy.
  • Advances in digital products and services enrich the lives of every American by providing new ways to communicate and interact with family and friends, businesses, non-profits and government.
  • Investing in digital will create jobs in the near future and help build the next generation of innovators and job creators.

We respectfully ask the Congress to allocate at least 5% of the public works bill to digital infrastructure and innovation.

We, the undersigned, are asking that the Congress allocate at least 5% of the proposed public works package to the support of digital infrastructure and innovation.

Technology breeds innovation and growth and touches every sector of our economy, public or private. Interestingly, while miles traveled in the US have nearly doubled from 1980 to 2005, in less than half that time, the number of internet users has increased by 8100% from 16 million in December of 1995 to 1.3 billion in December of 2007. The rate at which our world is becoming more and more dependent on technology continues to accelerate.

In addition, great ideas grow quickly in the digital space. Facebook opened to everyone with a valid e-mail address in September of 2006 and currently has more than 120 millions users worldwide. YouTube  took shape in February of 2005 sees roughly ten hours of video uploaded every minute. Huge strides in short periods of time have become possible with technology.

We believe that

  • President-elect Barack Obama's intent in asking Congress for a public works bill is to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
  • Advances in digital products and services enrich the lives of every American by providing new ways to communicate and interact with family and friends, businesses, non-profits and government.
  • Continued leadership in digital is essential for America to continue to be leaders in the global economy.
  • Investing in digital will create jobs in the near future and help build the next generation of innovators and job creators.
We respectfully ask the Congress to allocate at least 5% of the public works bill to digital infrastructure and innovation.

With the advances in technology, we are finding more and more technology that is created overseas. Let us create the jobs that we need, the employment, the market and the demand right here in our backyard instead of outsourcing our labor, our technology, and our funds.

We need to be leaders in the Technology field, We need to be the innovators inspiring others to join our cause, not the other way around.

Infrastructure of any type is good, you pay now, but reap untold benefits down the line. The same is true with digital infrastructure, as we will reap untold benefits in the near future, possibly ones we don't realize yet.

Any investment in critical infrastructure should include digital infrastructure as well. Access to information and technology will spur innovation and create jobs.

How should stimulus funds be invested in order to enhance digital infrastructure and innovation?

Why do you think this is important to the future of the U.S.?

The more widely available a digital infrastructure is, the more connected everyone will be, regardless of location or income level.

This is important to all citizens of the country, whether they live in the inner city, suburbs, or rural areas.

I especially would like to see funding to go toward strengthening security of online data and transactions, and know there is a dedicated group of people researching online security vulnerabilities (other than hackers).

I would like to see the US leading and listening to the world via digital innovation.

We all depend on the Internet for every day life as a resource. It is important we do not allow commercialization and monopolization of such a valued resource created for a common good.

Mr. Obama, This is a the most far reaching thing you can do to increase U.S. competitiveness in our increasingly digital and global century. We don't just need bridges and tunnels, but also the infrastructure at schools and in communities to support people starting new businesses and taking part in new kinds of projects.

Don't forget those of us Americans out there in rural and frontier parts of our United States as well as Indian Country. I'm in Tok, Alaska and have lived in rural parts of Wyoming and done work on the Wind River Reservation. The economic benefits associated with being connected to the Internet and stable telecommunications are enormous when one is disconnected from opportunities in so many other ways including geographic distance.

There is a wealth of talent and potential in rural and remote parts of the United States. A digital infrastructure can not only bring much needed opportunities and skill-building to these parts, but can also deliver important health services and other critical connections.

Digital infrastructure drives business and cultural activities in this country. And it's one area where we have a sustainable advantage.

Stability of the infrastructure is the most important thing. It needs to become as stable, if not more, than our phone lines. Speed would be second most important factor. We are crawling behind other countries when it comes to the broadband speeds that they enjoy.

We now create and consume all types of information through our country's digital infrastructure. It is no longer a pastime; it is now a critical part of business and culture. The US cannot afford to lag behind.

Infrastructure and research and development.

Technology makes life and work easier. Our country should move toward being a leader in technological development.

My main concern is developing a digital infrastructure that can't be controlled by one private entity. Also, making sure to foster as much open source and standards while still allowing companies to benefit from private research and development.
