After Nicholas Sconiers pleaded no contest, Judge Keith Brace withheld judgment and sentenced Sconiers to 10 months probation, $250 in court costs, a $750 fine to Alaqua Animal Rescue, 50 hours of community service work and no new law violations.

If Sconiers does not complete any part of the sentence, Brace could give Sconiers up to a year in jail and find him guilty of the original crime, according to Adrienne Emerson, the states prosecuting attorney.

Emerson had asked for the maximum sentence.

We asked for a year in the county jail and an adjudication of guilt, she said.

Champ, the abused miniature horse, is in good condition and still at the Alaqua Animal Refuge. Founder Laurie Hood said he will soon be ready for adoption.

I'm just happy that Champ is now happy and healthy, and that he survived the ordeal and that we were able to provide that for him, Hood said. And the fact that they surrendered ownership to us so we can find him a good, permanent, loving home.
