Florida Teacher Should Be Fired For Mistreatment of Austistic 5 Year Old Voting Him Out Of

Target:
Anyone With Children Or Special Needs Kids
This Florida teacher thought it was proper to have her classroom of 16 Kindergardners vote out a 5 year old Austic child "Survivor" Style.  For all of you that have children, know children or plan to have children this is a must read.  So that means everyone.
This Florida teacher thought it was proper to have her classroom of 16 Kindergardners vote out a 5 year old Austic child "Survivor" Style.  For all of you that have children, know children or plan to have children this is a must read.  So that means everyone.
We the undersigned petition that Wendy Portillo is terminated from teaching for her inexcusable behavior.  This Florida teacher thought it was proper to have her classroom of 16 Kindergardners vote out a 5 year old Austic child "Survivor" Style.  For all of you that have children, know children or plan to have children this is a must read.  So that means everyone.

I have a now 10 year old son that was diagnosed 5 years ago with Aspergers which is a high functioning form of Austism.  I was outraged to read that this teacher had this young boy stand up in front of the class and let his classmates "vote him out" and tell him why they didn't like him.  No child no matter what the circumstance deserves this sort of burden brought on by the teacher especially since he didn't ask to be the way he is.

Can you imagine the emotional scars that this child will have?  Imagine your child being treated like this and the Teacher was the main cause.  Please read the articles here.  Law enforcement says there were no laws broken and the School is "looking into it".

Wendy Portilla (the teacher) admits " I let the students decide if he could come back in. They took a vote. The count 2 for and 14 against, "I looked at Alex and asked, "How did it make you feel?" And he said, "Sad." And she looked at him and said, "No, it didn't!"

Please read full articles here:  http://www.wflxfox29.com/global/story.asp?s=8388562

This sort of behavior should not be tolerated. Please help us circulate this petition.  Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I am appalled at this teacher. I am a Mother of Cerebral Palsy boy that was taken from us 4 yrs. ago. He was 49yrs. old at the time. When he was a baby we had a Dr. tell us that he would never walk or talk, or be able to pick up a string bean and eat it. Well he went to school, Graduated from High School. Worked and had his own apt. and paid all his own bills. Don't ever let anyone tell you some one can't do anything and don't fit in. Thank you for all of you that are signing this.

How can a teacher be so cold. Did she not know that when she was studying to become a teacher that she was going to be teaching all types of kids whether or not what disability or etc, that a child has. IT sound like to me that besides her teaching skills that she is lacking in another area that teaches her how to be able to teach kids that has this type of disability or do she has the patience to deal with such a kid.

I was a school bus matron and I worked with autistc children I loved going to work every day and loved all of them. It was agreat job I learned so much and gave alot of myself to them. I think this is a sick women and should not be working with any childre she is giveing these young children the wrong message she should be teaching them to be caring and understanding because these children are special and need all the encouragement they can get.

I am disgusted by this teachers actions. I am a proud parent of a young man who is now 14 and has ADHD. I remember the struggles he endured in school before and after his diagnoses. Children can already be brutal on their own without having an adult, a TEACHER, standing next to them and promoting the hate. This is an outrage to say the least. I can only hope that the school board as well as any other school board in the US will revoke this teacher's license and find her unfit to even be allowed to stand in another classroom and claim to be an advocate for another child. The world outside of school is already full enough with hate for the "UNKNOWN". Teachers are supposed to be many things to our children. Among them is....A person they are supposed to feel safe with especially when a child has no one else to feel safe with. Teachers are not only supposed to teach "ACADEMICS" but they are also supposed to teach kids "EQUALITY". Help children to explore the "unknown" become more understanding of it not teach them to disable it. I hope that this lady does not have children of her own, if she does I would be fearful of their actions to others who are different and I certainly might think twice before I allowed my children to befriend them. If her children are in fact good citizens and do not partake in their Mothers beliefs then I have to say my heart goes out to them because this is going to have a negative effect on them as well. PLease from a mother with a child who has struggles from his disease, DO NOT allow this teacher to teach another day! The tribe has spoken!!!!!!!

This has to be one of the saddest stories that I have ever heard. This woman is not a teacher. Did she not even consider the emotional scars this can leave on this childs life? She has no business being in the public school system anywhere.

The teacher has no right to tell a child they are not wanted in class. Who cares if he is disruptive to the class for being the way he is? Put him in special classes, but NEVER, and I mean NEVER, let a teacher have a vote with the students to cast a kid out. It is harmful to their self esteem, and it's just flat out rude picking on the handicap. This teacher should not be allowed to teach anymore for this kind of behaivor. She is supposed to set a good example for the children.

I am totally disgusted by this teachers actions. I have a son who is 18 now and for 15 years has been part of a school called ACES since he was 3.....He has had a wonderful teacher for the past 3 years. I couldnt even imagine having him voted out it would destroy him. My heart goes out to any parent who's child this happens to. Obviously she cant handle our precious children, remove her from the school system before she does anymore damage to another child. It doesnt matter what her school records say now there is a first for everyone......this time she got caught plain and simple.

This case was made public, & so couldn't be swept under the rug. The teacher was caught being abusive and should have her license revoked. You would not believe the outrageous treatment that kids receive, on a daily basis, massive numbers, until it happens to yours---& schools & their employees not only get away with it when it is brought to their attention, but they are supported in ways they give them the further idea that they have the authority to do anything they want. I could tell you of gross mistreatment to an autistic boy & a boy exhibiting bipolar, in the San Juan school district, Sacramento, CA. & it was allowed even when brought to the districts attention. I wish there was an agency who would address these grave injustices because the pain of having no resolution remains in the scars carried by the kids to adulthood. The frustration of knowing about these abuse cases is in knowing that it still continues, & on our weakest. What message was that teacher really teaching?

obviously, this teacher isn't adult enough to know right from wrong (is she even a human being?). She lacks total self discipline, compassion and basic understanding that normal people posess. You wonder why there is prejudice in this world? Teachers and parents have the responsibility to teach and mold children to become productive, functional adults. These children are our future. We want to teach our children to have compassion for all living things no matter what! We have to protect our children and not create dysfunction on top of an already world of turmoil and insecurity. This is where you need to build their self esteem up not destroy it!! Okay, Lady tell me why you chose to teach again? Apparently, you feel the need to control and bully those who can't defend themselves. How sad. Get a life. You give other teachers a bad name. I have a family member that has an autistic child. Think about who will take of these children when their parents are gone. This is for my cousins son who is autistic as well. To the little soldier, hang in there little one.

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THIS TEACHER DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO HANDLE CHILDREN WITH ANY KIND OF DISABLILITIES. THE ACT OF PROMOTING THE SEPARATION OF A CHILD THAT NEEDS LOVE AND ATTENTION BY VOTING IS UNACCEPTABLE. SHE SHOULD BE TEACHING ACCEPTANCE, TOLERANCE AND ABOVE ALL CARE FOR ANOTHER HUMAN BEING.

This teacher has no compassion, as I see it. She needs to go back and learn the "golden rules" that I learned in Sunday school! To ridicule a child, especially at this young and tender age, is absolutely cruel! If this child does not get counseling about this situation, this will probably effect him the rest of his life. This teacher had no regard for this child's feelings and in letting the other children have a choice in voting the child out, she has, in my opinion, devastated this little boy's self-esteem!!! Shame on her!, Shame on her!!!!!!!!!

I have no children. However, one of my parents was a Special Education teacher for many years. I've had the pleasure to help out around her classroom on more than one occassion. I'm surprised to learn that an elementary teacher would lack the good sense to not make this type of mistake. Since when as adults do we allow such things to be decided by 5 year old children. Teachers are supposed to protect their students from embarassments such as this, not be the leader of them.

I work with "Special Needs" children and they have just as much right to be in a class room as anyone else! I am truly DISGUSTED!! with this teacher, and feel that her lack of understanding and compassion should rank number one on her reason for immediate dismissal. However, if she is dismissed from that particular school she will transfer or reapply and yet again be teaching our young children. Think about it, what is she teaching our children. Teachers are suppose to be role models. I would immediately remove my child from her class.

Anyone that works with children and does that should be immediately fired. She should not be allowed to work with children period. The school board and principal should be investigated for allowing this to happen. No one should be treat that way and I mean no one. This woman was given the honor of working with children she is supposed to be the teacher not one of the kids.

Every child deserves a chance to be loved and respected. This teacher had every opportunity to make a positive difference in this child's life, instead her decision to alienate and hurt this child will be remembered by all, especially the children. My vote says the children need a new teacher!

This is an absolute outrage. I have two small children and would be mortified by any behavior like this in my hometown. I don't think that she should just be fired. I think that the board should revoke her license and put her under review and then have a vote to see if they should re-instate her license to teach small children. We mold our childrens futures and all this woman is doing is teaching the other children that it's ok to outcast people that are different. They will grow up to be like her if we don't put a stop to behavior such as hers. I for one don't want people like her teaching my children...that's for sure!!!!
