In an exclusive interview with the Guardian from the no-fire zone on 13 May, Gnanakumar described the horrors of the final days of the 26-year war. A shell had exploded at the hospital where she was working, killing 47 people.            "This is really a disaster. I don't know really how to explain it. At the moment, it is like hell," she said at the time. "For us, shell bombing is just a normal thing now. It is like an everyday routine. We have reached a point where it's like death is not a problem at all."

Letter to President Obama Urges Action on Sri Lanka

PHR and several prominent human rights organizations expressed their deep concern over the dire human rights and humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka in a joint letter to President Barack Obama. More than 20,000 civilians are reported killed as a result of indiscriminate shelling from Sri Lankan military forces, and some 300,000 persons are being held in government-run internment camps.

What is the International Community(IC) doing for these selfless sacrificing doctors who worked for their suffering people when no one cared. It is a shame that the IC is silent to condemn these doctors to the horrors of internment but also to ignore the plight of 300,000 people (CITIZENS) living in CONCENTRATION CAMP conditions by run by a "democratic government"

I would ask you to free this lady immediately. She is British and is working solely to treat innocent civilians under very difficult circumstances. There is no reason why she should be prevented from doing this very important work by an inhumane political system.

Sri Lankan Government should release Vany and all other IDPs without further delay. All IDPs must be paid compensation. Entire WORLD is responsible for the continuing genocide inside the camps. At least now UN should accept their wrong doing and miss-handling of war and start working in the direction of bring the Government & army Leaders to The Hague, with War Crime charges. There is no point in keeping the satellite pictures in the file cabinets/computer hard disks.

Sri Lankan officials (The Rajapakse brothers & Sarath Fonseka) should be tried for war crimes for repeatedly bombing Tamil hospitals, detaining and torturing Tamil doctors and for over 20,000 Tamil civilian deaths this year alone.

I am concerned to hear that the sitiation in Sri Lanka continues.Despite the official war in Sri Lanka having ended, major human rights violations are still being reported as over 280,000 Tamil civilians are being detained in concentration camps in northern Sri Lanka. They are living in overcrowded conditions, lack of food and water, inadequate medical facilities and poor sanitation. The camps are very basic and surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. There are reports of large scale human rights violations such as rape, torture, abductions and child recruitment by government backed paramilitaries.

Damilvany, a British, is a good example that exposes the violation of fundamental rights of all people interned in Manik farm. Sri Lanka does not even bother to listen to International community or observe international obligations.

I knew her when she was living in London and she has always been a kind, gentle, considerate woman! I cannot believe the Sri Lankan government are still holding her captive- but then again I still can't believe half the things that government has done in the past 6months. If the world had any regard for its own laws, it would demand her immediate release and see that it happened quickly!
