Horribly Abused, Wrongfully Imprisoned, One Signature Away from Freedom

We, the undersigned, urge the California Department of Corrections Board of Parole Hearings and Governor Schwarzenegger to take immediate action to release Deborah Peagler (W#19341) from state prison. Debbie is a battered woman who was diagnosed in February 2009 with Stage IV lung cancer. According to medical reports, she has only days or months left to live.

Debbie already has served 26 years of a 25-to-life sentence despite the fact that in 2005, the Los Angeles District Attorney acknowledged in writing that she should be released from prison with credit for time served in the interests of justice.

Deborah Peagler poses absolutely no risk to public safety and should be released immediately to spend her remaining days with her family and other loved ones. Please do not let this battered woman die in prison.

Urgent Action: Call or Fax Governor Schwarzenegger Now

Dear friends,

With the help of supporters like you, domestic violence survivor Debbie Peagler was found suitable for parole on July 10th, 2009. In light of Debbie%u2019s terminal illness, the Decision Review Committee agreed to expedite its review of the Parole Board%u2019s decision, and it, too, found Debbie suitable for parole.

These are big steps, but Debbie is STILL IN PRISON.

Now, Debbie%u2019s freedom lies in Governor Schwarzenegger%u2019s hands. He has 30 days to affirm or veto the Parole Board%u2019s decision and thereby decide whether Debbie will spend her last days with her family or behind bars.

Because the Governor often reverses Board of Parole decisions, Debbie needs your support now more than ever.

Please take three minutes to go to http://www.freebatteredwomen.org/Alert_Deborah.html, where you can call or email Governor Schwarzenegger or send him a free fax and urge him to release incarcerated domestic violence survivor Deborah Peagler.

It%u2019s now or never. Every fax, every email, and every phone call matters.

Thank you.

Debbie Peagler is a domestic violence survivor who, thanks to a tragic miscarriage of justice, has spent more than 26 years in prison in connection with the death of her batterer. Now she is dying of terminal lung cancer. Please see www.freedebbie.org for Debbie%u2019s story and for more information and http://www.foxreno.com/news/20026929/detail.html for a recent TV news story.

Debbie Peagler has served 26 years of a 25-years-to-life sentence. The California parole board found her suitable for parole on July 10 of this year. The Los Angeles District Attorney has acknowledged in writing that she should be released from prison with credit for time served "in the interests of justice." And she is dying of Stage IV cancer. Please let her go home.

Everyone is entitled to a full day in court, Ms. Peagler did not get that. This case has been politicized. By any measure, legal, or humanitarian, she should be paroled. The people of California should not be made to be responsible for the cause of such human misery. Let her be with her family.

This woman should be released. She has been punished enough for whatever role she had in the victim's death. She should be able to spend whatever time she has left on this earth in the company of her family.

This is an outrage! Where is the compassion in our judicial system? The time has come for reform, sanity, and righting of these wrongs.

You are considering releasing some prisoners for financial considerations alone. It seems only fitting that you should permit the release of inmates who have been found worthy of parole, especially when the circumstances of their medical condition warrant even more attention and compassion

As a survivor of domestic abuse I know how terrifying and debilitating abuse can be. My mother endured countless physical beatings not to mention the mental and emotional abuse that was inflicted on her on a daily basis. Most people who have not lived through the terrifying experience of having someone you love fly off the handle and attack you at any given moment do not ususally understand why the woman stays. An abuser if nothing else is very skilled in manipulating, and breaking the victims very soul to bits. It is the fear and not knowing if this will be the time he will follow through on his threats. When there are children involved the mother is thinking only of her children. What will happen to them? How will I support them? What if he finds me and kills me who will raise and protect my children when I am gone. Debbie Peagler did what she had to do to protect herself and her child. I do not condone killing another human being but knowing first hand how skilled an abuser can be in destroying a persons trust, self worth and then when you add molestintation how could anyone much less a mother see a way out. The system up to this point has let Debbie down. Please give her the opportunity to spend what time she has left with her family.

It is a travesty to keep this woman in prison during her final days. As with so many other women who have struck back at their abusers, her incarceration flies in the face of moral behavior and sound legal judgment. Let her go!

Dear Prison Leaders, My husband Steve McHenry, and I, Carolyn Straub, support this prisoner's release as soon as possible. We are long time members of the outside network for CCWF Chowchilla prisoners, TC Paulinkonis and her mother Barbara, from whom we learned of this ill prisoner's plight. We also know about the prison system and the ungodly harm it does as a form of payback. Christian principles demand that you let this terminally ill prisoner go. The state of California has far too many budget problems and seems to have lost its reason on many issues - state park closures, taxation, you name it - the legislators who run this state are mixed up.. We have to pay sales tax, gas tax and the rest every day. And for what? Please do the right thing and release this prisoner. It is Christian, decent and compassionate. Cut out the "red tape" and release her. Thank you. Carolyn Straub Steve McHenry 439 Chateau La Salle Dr. San Jose, CA 95111
