Margaret Grant being led away to begin her prison sentence.

Free Margaret Grant

Target:
Free Margaret Grant who was wrongfully imprisoned

Margaret Grant, A Moncton woman has been sentenced to four years in jail for failing to provide adequate care for her sick Mother, Kathleen Grant which resulted in her death.

This is indeed a terrible tragedy but it is also a tragedy that our justice system would send a mentally ill woman/child of low intellect who lived a poverty stricken life to prison to serve as a warning to others.

The fact that Margaret Grant had three kids taken from her and one that chewed his first solid food in kindergarten speaks for itself, Why would The Department Of Social Development allow a woman they took THREE kids from to be a caretaker to her Mother?
Doesn't make sense... The system failed not just one but both of these women.

It will cost $166,830 a year to keep Margaret Gallant behind bars and possibly much more as I am sure she will require therapy as this woman IS mentally ill.

Incarcerating a mentally ill woman with the intellect of a six year old child is not the answer. Therapy and making an effort to improve her quality of life outside of prison is.

I find it disgusting that this judge made an example of someone who is clearly mentally ill and of low intellect and has lived her entire 48 years in poverty.

Yes, The system failed both Margaret and Kathleen Grant.

The system required a scapegoat to shoulder the blame for the system that botched up so horribly and Margaret Grant was that scapegoat.

This petition is for the many people who feel that Margaret Grant was wrongfully imprisoned and should be released from the prison system.

I’m sickened and disgusted! I’m revolted, repulsed, repelled, offended & appalled! It's a sick system of sickos tearing families apart and making more money then any of us ever will have. The government is responsible! Free this woman and give her help! How irresponsible was it of the government to take her children as she was not able to care for them, then let her "care" for her mom?

Ok! I’ve got to say something. I’ve known Margaret Grant for years. We used to be neighbours in the same apartment building. We always said hi and talked when we met each other in the stair well. She always had a smile on her face even though you could clearly see that there was something wrong. I knew from the first time I talked to her she didn’t have much of an education. She tried to find work even if she had a hard time to understand what her job or duties consisted of. But she always made and effort. She didn’t miss any time, was always pleasant with the customers. But that’s neither here or there. If she was not shown the proper educate of life how was she supposed to take care of herself let alone her elderly sick mother? This was a person who didn’t know the right from wrong. If she did know the right from wrong do you think she would’ve shown the apartment like she did? To her that was normal, that is the way they’ve been living for years, she didn’t know any different. PRISON is not the place for her. She should be in a group home with strict supervision and with rehabilitation so when she enters society she will be able to fend for herself. At this time she is not able to fend for herself. In prison there is a chance that she could be either abused sexually, emotionally, physically and god knows what else. She is saddened by what happen and I’m afraid that she may take her life if she stays in there for longer. Get her out of there.

It's a disgraceful situation on the part of the government of NB to not have been aware of this family situation, previously knowing her mental capabilities of looking after her mother and to not be checked regularly by in-home services of some kind. Releasing her immediately would be the proper action at this point.

Margart needs to realize that what she did was wrong but I don't think jail will help her. She needs professional help. She need to be taught to look after her self and become a productive member of society. If I thought jail would do this for her I wouldn't be on this site!!!! There must be some type of program out there that could help this woman. Two wrongs don't make a right

The government is responsible! Free this woman and give her help! How irresponsible was it of the government to take her children as she was not able to care for them, then let her "care" for her mom? Totally irresponsible, for which they should have to answer for. This is just another example of how the government does NOT care about the "common people", believe me, as I know first hand of government "promises" of help that never came!!

This is an injustice equal to the injustice recently displayed by Iran in the hanging of a young woman that was clearly innocent of any wrong doing. Our community and social programs failed this woman and her mother, she should not be used to set an example. I have yet to see anyone in senior homes jailed for the clear mistreatment of our seniors, why on Gods earth is this woman being used as an example.

Please free Margaret she doesn't need jail she needs help. This is not the place for her. Do not punish her anymore.

These circumstances point out that often it is a tragedy that sets in motion the process that will bring much needed and, often times, sought after assistance. I often wonder if our Governments pay sufficient attention or provide sufficient resources to the many who live in poverty and in homeless conditions and who suffer mental illness. While we grieve for the tragic loss of the Mother in this case, if Margaret is merely imprisoned and not given the help she needs, then what was achieved?

What bothers me most is that 'somebody' knew what was going on and turned a blind eye. I hope this petition will help with an appeal. The judge said that we must care for our seniors and vulnerable people - then did just the opposite. To the judge "Margaret qualifies as vulnerable".

The NB ? Justice? System is simply appalling and disgusting. Could it be that the female judge has a severe case of tunnel vision? Or perhaps a total mis-understanding of Ms Grant's mental capabilities due to Her Honour's severe lack of comprehension of the English language???? To all lawyers in Moncton or New Brunswick - please, someone, step up to the plate for Ms. Grant and take on this challenge pro bono. I just wish I had the legal qualifications to help her!

This ruling should be overturned A.S.A.P. This case is the epitomy of "Travesty of Justice".

A mother of three children who was proven mentallly uncaapable to care for her children should never have been put in charge of her sick and aging mother.. I feel our Justice system as well as our Social Service. along with our Community has failed shamefuly.

I am sure there are many people in our community who would agree that justice has not been served - justice for both the mother and daughter. I guess it's easier to put Margaret away - you know they say 'out of sight, out of mind' - that is until next time.

I do not know how much it will exactly cost us to keep Margaret Grant in prison. What I suspect is that help was not available to her when she desparately needed it.

So they took away her kids because she couldn't properly take care of them, yet left her to care for her sick mother? Then they punish her for her mother's death? Seems like it's all their fault. If she couldn't take care of kids she had no business taking care of her mother. The thing is it's easier to put kids in foster care then it is to put a sick aging adult in a nursing home apparently. They're as responsible as Margaret for the death of that woman's mother. They shoulda have taken her away when they took the kids away.

Mental illness should be treated like any other illness. Shame on the system , social workers, judge, prosecutor and all who made life an even worse prison for Margaret than the one she has lived all her sad, impoverished years. Take a look at the picture, aren't the other people lucky that they were not subjected to the ongoing trials, depression, poverty , ect as Margaret Grant. She has the right to real help for her illness. SHAME , SHAME
