Free Montather

Target:
immediate release of the Iraqi Journalist Montather al-Zaidi
Sponsored by:
"This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog," shouted Muntather al-Zeidi in Arabic as he threw his shoes at Bush during a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Dec. 14th.

Informed sources in Baghdad confirmed Mr. Al-Zeidi was heavily beaten right after the incident. (He can be heard shouting in pain in this video). And after beating him, the Iraqi authorities arrested Mr. Al-Zaidi.

Here is a statement issued by Al-Baghdadia (the TV channel he works with):

Al Baghdadia asks the Iraqi authorities to immediately release our employee Montather Al-Zaidi in line with the Iraqi and US promises of democracy and freedom of expression. Any action taken against Montather Al-Zaidi will remind us of the behavior we experienced during the time of the dictatorship era that when we witnessed violence, arbitrary arrests, mass graves and the confiscation of public freedoms and private.

We also call for press and media institutions and the Arab world to stand in solidarity with Montatger Al-Zaidi and call for his release.

Mantather al-Zeidi is the bravest man in the world. He should be praised for speaking out in the interests of his country.

I support Mr. al-Zaidi. What he did was minor compared to the atrocities the Bush administration (US) are responsible for against his fellow Iraqis. It was a deeply symbolic act and he should be honored for his courage and refusal to be silent. He did what millions (possibly billions) wish they could of. RELEASE HIM NOW!

Bush deserved worse than getting hit by a pair of shoes, for all the pain and suffering he inflicted on the Iraqi people.

I am one of the many Americans who applaud Mr. al-Zaidi for throwing shoes at the man responsible for "throwing" bombs, chaos, and disaster at the Iraqi people. Please forgive us for our heinous offenses against you and please forgive Mr. al-Zaidi for throwing shoes.

must be released immediately, he has been punished and should not be punished further. In the contexxt of the conflict in iraq extraordinary actions like his are surely inevitable and he harmed no-one but only expressed a patriotic protest

A sad reminder that freedom of speech is at risk or denied when politicians are embarassed.

This man must be released immediately. The charge against him is ridiculous. Am disgusted that he has been treated in such a shameful way. Jane Howarth

Soon to be Ex-President George W Bush has been responsible through irresponsible global actions for the deaths and suffering of hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq. That the emotional reaction of Muntather al-Zeidi caused only a dent in G.W's pride are a testiment to his concern in the face of the President's lack of such. The free world applauds his harmless and rather amusing act of defiance, and utterly condemns the violent overreaction and unnecessary pain he now suffers as a result of his bravery and honesty. I pray that he will be given all due care and respect, and released immediately.

The invasion of Iraq was a horrendous war crime. Zaidi should have his human rights respected and the Iraqi government should establish freedom of speech. Release him and compensate him for any mistreatment he has received.

In occupied Iraq after the invasion many have died violent deaths and many more suffer severe deprivation. Bush is a war criminal & Muntather al-Zeidi is a hero - he must be urgently released & commended for his courage to stand up to dictators such as Bush.
