Marcy on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
In 2000 my wife, Marcy, was winning 5 and 10K races she ran. She was room mother and Brownie troop leader for our daughter (now 15) and soccer mom for our son (now 19.) In August of 2000, she was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. This is a motor neuron disease which doctors say is always fatal. 50% of patients die within 3 years of diagnosis. Marcy has chosen life.
October of 2000 Marcy resigned her executive director position at Happy Tales Humane - the no kill animal shelter she started in Franklin, TN. She stopped walking Thanksgiving of 2001, had to get a feeding tube to eat September of 2002, and since March of 2003 has been quadriplegic and on a ventilator in our living room at home. As Marcy's caregiving took more and more of my time, I had to leave the advertising agency I helped start. Since March of 2003, caring for Marcy has been my 24/7/365 job.
Our income is almost entirely gift income, much of it through FlowersForMarcy.com. Blessedly, we have been able to keep our home but it is woefully inadequate for wheelchair accessibility. We are petitioning for Marcy to be featured on the television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition so she can see her children's rooms for the first time in five years. I have been reading Rob's column for years and it touches my heart every week. They are able to see the blessings they have been given while living through this tragic illness. Please help this family; they deserve it.
I think anyone who has put their family and their family memeber's needs first in their life are unique in this day and age and I certainly think someone who has made it this far, basically through her own family's support and that of their support network, needs some outside intervention to get her to the next level.
Your program has helped so many people who needed help badly. Please help Marcy by making her home more accessible for her handicap. I do pray she will be featured on your show.
Marcy is a very deserving person and ALS is such a tragic illness. The simple things that we take for granted everyday (like the ability to move from place to place with ease) is a wish everyone should be granted. Please help this wonderful lady like she has helped so many of our animal friends from Happy Tales Humane.
Knowing that your show does make a difference in people's lives. I believe you have to ability to make this families life much better.
I love Extreme Makeover:Home Edition because it allows the people like Marcy Payne get what she needs and helps families also through trying times. Our community has been touched with the courage and faith of this family through their difficult circumstances they have been faced with. Marcy has given so much of her time to her community and with starting Happy Tales, her husband quit his job to take care of her. What an amazing family!!!!! What an inspiration this family is to me and I hope you will consider doing the home makeover for them, please help this deserving family in their time of need.

I appreciate Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Ty and his co-workers in their efforts to help people live in better homes. It's so good to see so many of the personal touches they use to help the families not only enjoy their homelife more, but to be healthier. Marcy's situation and her family's dedication to helping her continue to live as long as possible would be so much better if their home was remade to fit her needs. Just to look at her smiling eyes and see the lovely spirit she has is so inspiring, I truly feel her story would bring peace and hope to many others going through difficult times. Extreme makeover helps alot of people that are in need, from natural disater to major health issue. The Payne's are a very deserving family. She has been through years of illness. She is a fighter,most of us would have gave up.

I love watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, because so often it highlights people facing rare situations, doing well with what they have. Then the crew comes and makes their life so much better. I can think of no better idea than Marcy Payne and her family, for the show.
