Get White Out

Target:
Governor Rick Perry
Sponsored by:
Chairman Kathleen White, of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has failed the public and worked to protect polluters, not people. She has failed to make decisions in anticipation of upcoming environmental challenges, has defended industry in the permitting process and weakened the rights of citizens to protect their communities. Our state air quality plans are not working, and permit enforcement remains lax.

Chairman White should be replaced with someone who is committed to protecting our health, who has a strong record of environmental leadership, who is free of ties to industry, who will be tough on polluters who break the law, and will be proactive in reducing emissions of mercury, global warming gases and smog-forming pollution.

The TCEQ should actively promote the most sustainable, long-term solution to global warming - replacing dirty, fossil-fuels such as coal and oil with clean, renewable energy from nonpolluting sources like solar and wind power, while Increasing energy efficiency and conservation measures.

The new TCEQ Commissioner should initiate action within 60 days to address the climate crisis, quite likely the most serious and threatening problem of this century.

Like millions of Texans, I live downwind of several current and newly permitted coal-fired power plants, however, I don't live within the too narrowly defined TCEQ area of one to two miles from the plants. Texans need commissioners who will work to protect their health from pollution, not work to give polluters whatever they want regardless of the adverse impacts on health and the environment.
