Cash for Clunkers has helped dealers and many buyers, but those buyers are still people who can afford and are qualified to get car loans, while many people have no transportation, may be unemployed or disabled, and cannot afford to buy any car at all. Rather than destroy and waste the clunker vehicles it seems a more practical use to give those directly to low-income families who don't have reliable transportation (preferably not through non-profit organizations unless you can ensure they won't have a lot of red tape and hoops to jump through to qualify) who desperately need a car to look for a job, to get to work, to get to doctors' appointments, to take college courses, drop their kids off at school, etc. Taking a bus, biking, or walking is not always an option. Buses don't run late hours in many areas and people may have no way to get home from their job, or have to walk in dangerous neighborhoods with their kids without a car or in bad weather which is a deterrent to taking jobs offered, plus they are limited to local employment that may be scarce without the ability to commute further. Please sign this petition asking for an amendment to allow for these vehicles to go directly to people who truly need them rather than waste this opportunity, which taking these steps would also prove to be a strong stimulus that would help boost the economy further as more people could obtain jobs, pay taxes, and get an education, all of which benefits the nation's ability to prosper and compete, plus having cars helps ensure that kids don't miss school or doctor's appointments, and these drivers would purchase more gasoline and items at stores that would now be within their reach, especially if they are able to increase their income through greater access to job opportunities.

i have a new baby, and my boyfriend and i have one car, both working full time jobs. its hard enough to find a baby sitter and then either one of us have to take a bus to work, and wait for the other to pick us up because the buses dont run that late.. we have been trying to save money, but honestly with bills, and the baby we just dont have the money. we didnt have the credit to qualify for a new car if we turned ours in, so we didnt do it. if we could get some help with another car that would be awesome and really help us out. :)

How embarrassing and difficult it is to support a stimulus package from an administration that I voted for. Surely we could "stimulate" the morale of those who can't afford a car by having a better plan than the destruction of these cars. Please think this thing through more efficiently. I work for a high line automobile. I see wealthy people purchase cars everyday. Stimulating a family's ability to own a car, thus giving them the pride and opportunity to find a job, go to the doctor, etc, is the direction this stimulus package should have gone. It was designed to stimulate our economy and protect our environment. What kind of stewards are we that destroy both environment and property? Think before we do this again.

Many of the "clunkers" are not gas guzzlers (see link below), and even if they were, destroying them is not the best use when they could be being used instead to drive people to work who can't get to work because they can't afford cars.

WHY DIDN'T THE GOVERNMENT THINK OF THIS WHEN THEY ORIGINATED THIS 'CASH FOR CLUNKERS" CONCEPT? THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE HELPING THE MIDDLE AND LOWER-INCOME CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY!!

I am totally on board with this idea. For the past six years I've been on Social Security disability and have not had a vehicle. Walking more than a short distance is very painful for me and I wish I had a car every day. My circumstances are such that I've even lost friendships from people who were just plain tired of hauling me around to the grocery, to pay bills etc.
It's probably too late to implement this idea since most of the "clunkers" are already smashed in the car crushers. If the people who can't afford to buy new cars, and the used cars are all trashed- then there's no affordable vehicles for the poor and disabled to purchase. Imagine that- we get screwed again!

Great concept. i know many people without cars who are stuck in poverty because they haven't been given the same equal opportunities. If they had a car to compete for jobs at least they'd have more of a chance. Cash for Clunkers doesn't work for them, but only for people with cars, money, and bankers and car industry people. Not fair!!!

I agree this is a great way to help people without spending any more money -- give them the cars that are just being junked anyways so they can get to jobs!!! The more people working the more it boosts the economy, and the poorest have gotten the least benefit from the stimulus that everyone else is getting.

i think this would be a great benefit for these who like myself who is on a fixed income and making payments i can't really keep paying trying to pay bills to is put me in the hole but if i don't me and my 4 children would not have a way to get around so i think this would help not just me but alot other who are stuggling in these days and time its so hard to get around without a car you can't even ask a person for a ride people have really gotten into them selfs these day your own family and so called friends i would really love to be one to recive a van car or whatever and hope everyone who is in need on this petition do so as well hope this works out lets work togather and spread this around to everyone god bless

You have to wonder why no one else came up with this idea???!!! The cars aren't being used, people who need to get to jobs need cars, and that helps the economy, so its good for everyone! A small token to give to those in need compared to what we've been giving to Wall Street, the car makers and dealers, to the people who traded in their cars for new ones, and the banks who made the loans. This is the ethically right and more practical thing to do.

These cars could be put to a much better use by giving them to the unemployed and poor who don't have cars to go out and look for and travel to jobs. The govt stimulus should not only benefit the auto businesses and those who have money and cars already who qualify for the Cash for Clunkers car loan program, but by giving these discarded vehicles to people who need them so they can get jobs it prevents waste and is truly stimulating to the economy.
