Cletus-A dog given only 5 days to be adopted before he was euthanized.

Give them a Tomorrow

Target:
To give these dogs 3 months to find a home before they are euthanized.
Sponsored by:
This yorkshire terrior's name is Cletus. Cletus was a stray dog brought to Richland County Dog Shelter in Mansfield, OH on 9/25/08. He was euthanized by gas chamber on 9/30/08. This dog did not have more than a week to be adopted. I am starting this petition to give the healthy dogs brought in to this shelter more than three months to be adopted. This shelter is a high-kill shelter that uses the gas chamber and should be put under control. Please help!

We the unsigned believe that your actions to this and many other dogs in your shelter are unfair. We demand that the use of the gas chamber must be stopped and these dogs are given more than three months to be adopted. This dog inparticular was not given more than a week to be adopted for a second chance at life. You state that you are not a 'dog catcher' or a 'murder', but we believe that you are being unfair to these animals. You also state that you are the product of dog owner's responsibility; but you are not giving the dogs any more of a chance than the irresponsible owner. By using the gas chamber, you are choking and sufficating them until they pass. Give these dogs a fighting chance and 3 months to find a home.

I am appalled that you give these animals under 3 months to find homes! I would have gratefully adopted cletus rather than see him put to death. How can you bear living with what you do?! Maybe advertising yourself as a no kill shelter or a shelter working in that direction would get you more donations. I know i would never donate to a facility like yours. I donate to local ones here, but i only give the no kill shelters funding.

No, nor would i ever.

I am against high kill shelters. I believe that these animals have the right to live. The should have a chance to find the right home. Many animals have been killed before being given this chance.

No!! i would never, ever work in a high kill shelter!!!

There is no justification whatsoever for killing these dogs. Perfectly healthy dogs should be given a loving home. Humans have no right to kill animals. It is shameful and has no place in the 21st century. When will the age of the wiser human race begin??
# 484:

High kill shelters are not helping the animals. This is also animal abuse. The animal shelters should work for helping the animals to find new homes, an that often takes more than a week.

No, I've never worked at a high kill shelter or any shelter. If I should work at an animal shelter it wouldn't be a high kill shelter, it would be a shelter that helps the animals.

I am very against high kill shelters.. I have 2 rescue dogs myself. A yorkie and a maltese. I could not afford to pay the high price of any dog from a breeder and im sure there are many people like me who would love the chance to rescue .. I believe homes could be found for most of the dogs in shelters....

NO NEVER would

Healthy animals deserve a chance to be adopted and not given only a week to be adopted out!

No I have never worked in a high kill shelter but read about them all the time and how others rescue animals from these shelters. They should be outlawed! The insanity needs to end.

# 481:

Every living being has a right to live, there are many non kill shelters out there, so there is no reason for kill shelters at all. I rescued both my dogs from kill shelters, both at the last minute. Now - 1,5 years later I still cannot believe that someone could possibly kill such lovely animals!

I have never and will never work in a kill shelter.

# 480:

It is just insane that these things take place today. I got one of my dogs from a shelter.......thank God it was not a high kill one...or I may have never had the chance to get her. She is a wonderful dog and we love her very much. All dogs should have the chance to find a good home. Five days is just a ridiculous time frame to work with.

No, I have never worked in a shelter.

# 479:

These dogs deserve a chance to live and be with a loving family. It breaks my heart to think any dog being put in a gas chamber. It is barbaric and inhumane!

No, I've never worked in a shelter of any kind.

Yes I am against high kill shelters.I believe that three months is not adequate time to be placed in loving homes.A perfectly beautiful animal who would have made someones life joyus will never have that chance. Not to mention all the cases of early euthanization of lost pets taken into shelters.I also believe that it is not just early euthanization that is the only problem. There needs to be a revised set of requirements set for adoption approval. Many more animals could and would be adopted if they could get homes approved. It is not because lack of want theses animals are in theses shelters so long.

No I have never worked in a shelter. I would love to volunteer but as long as most of theses facilities are high kill I cannot. It would be more strssful to see euthanizations going on every day than to hear about it.I want to see real changes. This is a start.

I am against this these animals need to be given a chance to have a home just because someone left them doesn't mean anything there are great dogs out there that would love to be someone's pet they just need to be given time to find a home

No I have never worked in a shelter

Give the healthy animals more time to be adopted, use donated time on the local tv station to show the dogs and cat and give them more exposure to the public. Think outside the box.

I am opposed to all kill shelters. Human beings are responsible for the existance of these animals. They are at our mercy and are dependent upon us. We must at least give them a fair chance at finding a home. A week is not long enough to give them a fair chance.

I have never worked at high kill shelter.

I think more resources should be put towards animal neutering programs and educating adopted parents on their responsiblilty as pet owners to neuter their animals, rather than allowing people to dump unwanted pets at a kill shelter.
# 457:
11:46 am PST, Nov 6, Rachel Feinberg, Indiana
Yes, because they need to give animals more of a chance to find a nice home. Our attention should be in getting animals neutered and spayed for better population control. A week is just not enough time to give someone a chance for life.

No, I couldn't do it.

# 456:

I am againist kill shelters period. Most do not even give animals a chance to go to rescue or to be adopted. I have dealt with these shelters and being in rescue sometimes its like pullig teeth to get these dogs out of there, even if they are going to be PTS. I am sickened by how they treat these animals, branding them by age, gender adn general appearances, to me this is animal cruelity plain and simple

No not in one but do know people that have, the stories I have heard are terrible.

# 455:
9:07 am PST, Nov 6, Heidi Andrews, Indiana
yes, three days is not enough of a chance for a dog to be adopted. This is horrible. Everyone should have a chance for a new life.

no

# 454:
8:55 am PST, Nov 6, Dawn Marlowe, Indiana
High kill shelters are only interested in the bottom line. I really don't understand how they can sleep at night knowing they do such horrible things to defenseless creatures. All these animals want is a chance for a better life!!

No I don't nor will I EVER work for a high kill shelter. I do work for a dog rescue of which there are hundreds if not thousands for every imaginable breed. All these shelters have to do is to contact rescues & people are very willing to take animals in when they know they are saving lives.

# 453:
8:31 am PST, Nov 6, Gayle Orlando, Illinois
The way this nation treats it's animals is appalling. For a highly adoptable dog to be "euthanized" (I put that in quotes because death by gas chamber is hardly merciful) after only a few days in a shelter is terrible.

I have never worked in a shelter, but I am involved in rescue--and it makes me heartsick to see how we as a nation treat our dogs.

Adorable adoptable animals need enough time to be adopted by a loving home. 1 week is simply not enough.
