On September 19, 2008 a horrible tragedy occurred in Pahrump, Nevada. A Veteran of the War in Iraq, diagnosed and rated by the VA at 70% disabled for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), "snapped" and became engaged in an altercation with the Nye County Nevada Sheriff's Department. When the gun battled ended, a Deputy, Eric Murphy, and the Veteran, Pat Lamoureux, lay wounded.
Deputy Murphy was released from the hospital within 36 hours; his injuries were NOT life threatening. Deputy Eric Murphy returned to work within two months.
For the past year, Pat Lamoureux, whose total VA disability is 100% unemployable, has been incarcerated in the Nye County Detention Facility in Pahrump, Nevada pending trial. His trial date has not been officially been set, but he will most likely not see his "day in court" until APRIL 2010. His bail was set at an astronomical $2.5 million dollars, making it impossible for him to be released to seek treatment.
The Nye County Detention Center in Pahrump, Nevada was recently investigated by the ACLU, those findings included: the facility was contaminated with black mold; there are no protocols for health screening of incoming inmates, thereby incoming inmates are dumped into the general population without knowing if they carry communicable diseases; there are no medical personnel on the premises to oversee the inmates, unqualified personnel make the determination if an individual needs to see a doctor; the facility is over-crowded; the ventilation system at the facility is inadequate resulting in stagnate air-flow which further promotes the spread of illness - the list goes on.
These same findings were brought to light in 2003 - and yet the facility continues to house detainees in 2009 - six years later.
These are the conditions in which Iraq War Veteran Pat Lamoureux has been detained since September 19, 2008.
During this year he has not been afforded any treatment from the VA, and only twice in July and August 2009 was he "seen" by a psychiatrist briefly. He has not received any counseling treatment for PTSD in a year.
Pat Lamoureux suffers from a serious pulmonary condition which is service connected and also rated by the VA at 60% disabling. He has multiple other service connected disabilities as well. Pat Lamoureux has not received any treatment by a physician for his pulmonary condition for a year.
Two months after this incident occurred, the VA abruptly discontinued his medications for PTSD. Through a system error (?) he was able to continue to receive his pulmonary medications; those refills expired in August 2009. It has been a struggle to have this Veteran continue to receive medications.
On September 19, 2009 it will be one year since this horrible tragedy occurred.
Prior to this, Iraq War Veteran Pat Lamoureux had NO CRIMINAL RECORD. He comes from a family filled with law enforcement officials. His close friends are law enforcement, or were law enforcement. How can it be explained that a man with no criminal history or vendetta against law enforcement would suddenly engage in such actions? The answer: PTSD and the failure by the VA to appropriately treat the Veteran; Pat Lamoureux was over-medicated by the VA, he was never appropriately treated for PTSD by the Veterans Healthcare System of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas.
Pat Lamoureux has been severely punished for a year and his case will not go to trial until April 2010.
As Americans - is this how we thank our Veterans? Instead of helping them in their darkest hours, we throw them in a facility that should be condemned and let them rot for over a year before they even get a trial? The facility that Pat Lamoureux is being detained in should be condemned.
We treat stray animals better than Iraq War Veteran Pat Lamoureux is being treated.
At the time of the incident, a bullet was left in Pat's left leg. A year later, the gun shot wound has become abscessed and severly infected. The bullet must now be removed. Considering the conditions of the facility, is it any wonder he has an infection?
Please help Pat Lamoureux receive the proper treatment. He has been severely punished enough for the past year; he needs help not further incarceration.
There was no criminal intent; there was no premeditation. This was not a crime - it was a tragedy. Local Sheriff Anthony DeMeo publicly stated: "He had a battle plan laid out, and he executed that battle plan." For the complete story go to http://www.lvrj.com/news/50575417.html an article which appeared in the Las Vegas Review Journal July 12, 2009, "Iraq War Veteran awaits shooting trial as wife looks for help."
Tell Nye County Nevada, the community of Pahrump, Nevada, the Nye County Sheriff's Department, and the Nye County District Attorney's Office that TIME SERVED is the appropriate answer - IT HAS BEEN A YEAR. Help this worthy Veteran get the treatment that he deserves - he fought for YOU, he fought for our Country, help save his life!
Thank you for letting your voice be heard.

I am going through a very similar situation with my son in law who returned from Iraq in October 2009 on my birthday. He is currently sitting in a Fairbanks, AK jail awaiting trial. He deserves help for his PTSD not jail time. He asked for help in Iraq and was told to "suck it up and be a man". He also asked for help upon return to his base in Alaska. Why does the cry for help go unanswered? Why aren't the Sargeants, Captains and others sitting in jail with him? The Army should be heald accountable for helping these Veterans who sacrificed for us. I too will not lay down and be quiet. Enough is enough. Help our Veterans by honoring their service and providing them with the help they need. This will be my mission in this lifetime. I will pray for this soldier, please pray for "our" soldier and all other soldiers who need us.

i think it is time that our government own up to what is going on with our vets. It's not just time served come home and go on. This person needs help not jail time. There are far too many problems with our returning men and women that are not being addressed. Each case must be looked at and this one has circumstances that are way beyond normal. Look at his past before Iraq,no trouble. Giving someone a bunch of pills and calling them ok just doesn't work. This needs to be escalted to a higher authority.

I am a Viet Nam veteran that has suffered with PTSD since 1968. I was at the local VA a few weks ago and there was no heat and there had to be 150 vets in the building and very cold. When will America take care of the men & women that served so americans can life the free life.

This man needs medical help, not punishment. Rarely do I believe a person's mental condition should keep him from punishment, but this is indeed such a case. The PTSD as well as the drugs given this man after the horrible experiences in Iraq should absolutely mitigate what's happened here. I should know, I have a 100% service-connected disabled veteran husband and a son who was critically injured in Iraq. I know how the VA operates as well as our Armed Services. I am also a retired paralegal and have seen people do far more with little or no punishment. Once again, in our fair country this day and age, things are so discombobulated when it comes to true criminals and a situation like this. We have got to work together, case by case to right these wrongs and get our country's priorities straightened out. I also believe that the left-wingers in this country would love to and already have labeled our returning veterans. We have got to nip this in the bud...now. God bless this man and his family.

I used to live in Nevada. I know the state is hurting because it doesn't have a state sales tax, but letting a prison get into this bad of shape is disgraceful. The conditions of prisons is a reflection not on the prisoners but on the society that runs them. The reflection this prison is mirroring to the people of Nevada is not a pretty one. This soldier should not be held in these conditions, especially not in the USA.

Treatment is more appropriate for a veteran suffering from PTSD, not incarceration. The only way he can be properly treated for his disorder is to be released with time served as adequate punishment. We should support our veterans. We send them into violent circumstances and some are truly adversely affected, it is our duty to provide the treatment needed for these young soldiers so they can return to a normal life. Please release this soldier as time served so he can get the treament he needs.

I am a lifelong friend of Sue Lamoureux. My father served as an officer and was a Paratrooper in WWII and the Korean War. My oldest son is going to Officer School and has served a tour in Iraq, and my youngest is enlisting this fall. It turns my stomach to see how the VA, the entity entrusted with taking care of our people who have put their lives on the line and sacrificed to serve our country, is dispatching their responsibility to these heroes who have suffered as a result of their devotion to our nation's well-being. Please make sure Pat gets the treatment he so desperately needs AND DESERVES.

I'm Pat Lamoureux's second wife. He is a kind loving man that was left was scares from the Iraq war. I have letters that I received while he was over there, though no real details were giving to me by him. I know that he was so terribly traumatized by what he had to do and witness to serve our country. Upon his return I meet with Pat a few times and discussed his disabilities due to the war. I'm disgusted that more assistance wasn't provided to him. Give him the help he needs immediately. Release him and take care of this veteran that served our country. I have two boys that signed up in the Marines over the last 2 years because of Pat's encouragement and support. Pat is a leader and this country needs to honor our Vets. RELEASE HIM!

I believe that veterans need to be evaluated and treated according to their needs. They are not getting the help they need when they get home from war, this has been going on that i know of since my grandfather was in WWII and came home a different person and never got the help he needed. It is a shame for this country, and something needs to be done about it.

This is a scar on the face of Nevada as well as our US government. I hoped the men representing and fighting for our country would have been treated better than those returning from Vietnam. It does not appear so. Shame on this state and those elected to represent the people for allowing this to go on as it has. The least this man deserved was proper medication for his injuries while representing this country. Rest assured if this had been the son of a congressman, senator or wealthy individual Pat Lamoureux would have been released already.

To treat any human being, especially an Iraq combat veteran, with the utter contempt and disregard for human rights that the piss-ant Town of PahRUMP has show Patrick Lamoureux is unconscionable.
I'm from Texas.
I wonder how many of our brave Texas boys had to die, so Ms. Deputy Bitch can have both her husband, and her un-Godlike opinions. OPINIONS, THAT BY THE WAY ARE PROTECTED BY ALL THOSE DEAD TEXAS, AND NEVADA SOLDIERS, AND THE LIVING ONES (WHO CAME BACK WITH PTSD) LIKE PATRICK LAMOUREUX!
So PahRUMP, get on you knees and thank God for them. The soldiers that is, not your deputies.

Let Pat be with family. I am sure his family would make sure he would stay in the area and appear for his court date. September 19, 2009 will mark one year that a horrible tragedy occurred involving my husband, Pat Lamoureux, a Veteran of the War in Iraq, and the Nye County Sheriff's Department in Pahrump, Nevada. What happened that night was not a crime, it was a tragedy.
For one year Pat Lamoureux has been detained in a county jail. A 100% disabled Veteran of the War in Iraq has been denied treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (rated at 70% disabling by the VA) and he also has not received treatment for a serious pulmonary condition, also rated by the VA. This pulmonary condition is so severe, that it caused him to be medically discharged from the Army! Yet, for one year he has not seen a physician for this condition.
The charges against my husband, who never had a criminal record, carry a sentence of life in prison.
The Veterans Administration is establishing a clear record of its inability to appropriately care for our Veterans. My husband's case is an extremely tragic example of the VA's failure.
I have fought for the last year to save my husband's life, and I will continue to fight. As Americans we must support our Veterans. As Americans we must demand that they receive the proper treatment.
If there is anybody in this country who deserves a second chance - it is a Combat Veteran.
Pat Lamoureux has been detained for a year - please help me save my husband, please help me get him released so he can obtain the proper care and treatment.
Sue Lamoureux
