EXAMPLES OF CRUELTY ARE POISONING OF DOGS AND CATS (THIS IS VER COMMON) WHICH LEAVES THE ANIMAL TO SUFFER AN AGONIZING DEATH. HANGING AND SHOOTING OF DOGS ESPECIALLY HUNTING DOGS, DROWNING, ABANDONING, CHAINING OF DOGS FOR ALL THERE LIVES OUTSIDE IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER AND THE COLD OF WINTER.

I am English but living as a resident of Crete for 2 years. I took in two stray dogs, one, a german pointer puppy tied up a year ago outside my house on a short shoe string, belly bloated with worms. he became a fine dog and well loved . On sunday night he was poisoned just across the road, where someone had left poisoned meat. Despite being taken to an emergency vet,he suffered all night and died on monday. I live in a greek neighbourhood. Other people here are also outraged and worried for their own dogs. Its illegal, its cruel and causes suffering to the owners. My friend who waqs looking after my dogs and nursed Jack, my dog, through this horrible death is severely affected. Wake up Greece, youre in the E.U. now and its not okay to kill animals in this horrific way.

All the people who helped, including the lady who organised it, and the team of vets, were foreigners, only a handful of Greeks were involved. most of them just don't want to know, they are happy to see cats and dogs starve to death in the winter, or get poisoned. Tourists would be horrified if they knew what goes on here.

I have lived in Greece fro many years and was appalled by the disregard for animal welfare. I would never recommend Greece a a holiday destination for this reason and actively try to discourage people from visiting until such time that the situation changes. Post #9911 says that stray animals are being poisoned, but it is not just the strays - in villages domestic pets are also being murdered in this way. We have lost a dog and a cat through this barbaric custom. I beg the Greek Government to take note and act - NOW.

I have been visiting Greece for 12 years, during this time have seen a great improvement in the condition of animals. More recently barrel dogs, 'abandoned' at the road side, have given concern. However, the photo's provided on this site show that all is still not well and therefore I have added my signature to the petition. But don't think cruelty is confined to Greece, recently saw awful housing conditions and animal status, in the UK!

We are regular visitors to Greece every year. shop keepers make vasts sums of money from the trade of pet food to soft hearted tourists evey summer, we buy "Greek Cat calenders in bulk to bring home. Either stop selling the products to tourists to feed the animals which allows the breeding of ferile cats or look after them

When other less damaging laws - such as occasional impromptu bouzouki playing at tavernas or Kafeneions without a licence - are met with hefty fines, I do not understand why the animal welfare laws are ignored and poisoning continues without any attempt to prosecute the killers. They could try to see it as a way to make money!

I think it is dissgusting what you do or don't do for your animals why are you so cruel, you are an insult to the human race and you should have laws for people who treat animals bad in most countries that picture at the top where I am signing the person who did that would get a jail sentence, you need to step up your animal welfare.
