Hawai'i is Hawai'i because it is natural and free and beaches are everywhere. I haven't seen any "no beach access" signs around here yet, but obviously, someone is trying to. That someone does not get it: people come to Hawai'i to escape the craziness of the continental USA, and yet, they come here and try to have the same things they have at home, like no beach access. Hello! Duh! IF YOU DO THE SAME THINGS YOU DO AT HOME, THE RESULTS WILL BE THE SAME, AND THERE WILL BE NO REASON TO COME TO HAWAII! It would be the same as your home!!!! So leave Hawai'i to be Hawai'i, which means Native way of thinking and doing things and taking care of the land, and most of all, sheer love and respect and total admiration for the land, taking it into consideration so that we can enjoy it and benefit from it forever.

I have lived in kailua since 1970...it has always been a beach community...what sense is there to have a beach community without access to the beach?? And so it goes with all hawaii..it's the beaches that make hawaii, hawaii..without accesses, we might as well live on the mainland.

Beaches are and should be public land. Why should any one person be allowed to prevent any one else from enjoying Hawaii's beaches? My family owns property on the Sand Dunes in Michigan. We have lake front property and it is public access. Although we are not crazy about having the public trapezing across our front yard we realize that this comes with owning lake front property. Likewise, people who choose to live on the beach should do so with the full understanding that they do NOT own the beach but yet are privileged to be able to live in a home that fronts the beach.

We cannot allow money or income to be the determining factor in beach access. No matter how much they may want to, no one should be allowed to own the ocean. Keep Hawaii Hawaiian!

ALOHA, IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT FREE AND UNFETTERED ACCESS ( I.E.INGRESS AND EGRESS ) TO ANY AND ALL HAWAIIAN BEACHES BE AVAILABLE TO ALL IN PERPETUITY WITH NO RESTRICTIONS OTHER THAN PUBLIC SAFETY.

What good is a beach if it's not accessible for all of us. Let us be part of this wonderful world and don't try to exclude us.

It is very sad to see all the signs saying "No", "No", "No", in the most beautiful area of the island.

The beach belongs to us all. The rich have sequestered enough land in these islands without us letting them take out beaches also. I'd like to see beach front development banned so there is no conflict and the general population can enjoy our greatest resource; the ocean.

The beaches are obviously one of the largest draws for tourists as well as why locals live there. The rights to access are critically important to protect.

Hanama Bay was once a visited beach my locals, and then it was made into a terroist attraction. Don't let that happen to all the open beaches around the islands. Local people give up a lot just to live there, and the one thing that they love the most is the views & the beaches. Going to the beach is a family affair that should not be restricted!

Pass and enforce laws that will assure free access to all beaches. There should not be any "private" beaches.

I have spent two years in total in Hawai'i and beach access is obviously an important issue for locals and visitors alike. Existing access needs to be preserved and new access needs to be put in to improve quality of life for the majority of people.

The beaches should be for everyone to enjoy. Granted, the housing developements do create more jobs, and people who buy these houses should show a higher responsiblity to make sure these beaches can be enjoyed, cared-for and respected by EVERONE. It's a priveledge, not a right.

I am a local girl now living in California and I am appalled to hear that some people want to block access to Hawaii beaches. The beaches in Hawaii are for all to enjoy; they are what makes Hawaii so special. Protect beach access in Hawaii and take down those gates!
# 170:

I agree 100%. The beach is for everyone, it was created for all of us to enjoy, and no one has the right to deny access to it. We need to stand together and take back our beaches.

More parking at trail heads (including on State highways and other main thoroughfares) with more trails/access to reach the shoreline are needed. As long as this doesn't significantly increase destructive human impact on coastal areas, this should be expanded to include county-owned coastal areas as well.

I am an avid paddler for 11 years now also a Hawaii resident for 20 yrs and Beach access is a top priorty. It should not be restricted and gated. The wealthy should not be allowed to restrict access, they do not own the waterfront!!!!!This is urgent to act on this NOW.

As a former resident of Hawaii, and as someone who has family residing in Hawaii, I am greatly concerned about the issue of beach access in Hawaii. Beach access is a right of all the people of Hawaii, not just the priviliged few exercising their "property rights".

There are plenty of coastal areas in the United States where you can buy and control access to the beach. The state of Hawaii is not one of them. If you buy property here, be prepared to live by the laws and culture of this land. That's why we live, work, and raise families here. No matter how much money you have, you can't just buy land in Hawaii and expect to bring your Mainland control and culture to the island. And for the lawmakers that sold the access along with the property, shame on you. You sold out the very people, your families, and friends that voted for you and put you in office. I'm amazed that you don't get that?!?
