Mahalo for signing the Hawaii Education Matters petition and speaking out against Furlough Fridays!

On Friday, October 23, 2009, we marched at the State Capitol and gave Hawaii%u2019s children a voice. The Governor admitted she would be in favor of a return to the table to talk, and public opinion began to sway those in the senate and the legislature.

Now, we need your help again. To be an effective vehicle for change, we must keep our attention focused on our political leaders.

Please join us in calling, emailing or visiting your representatives THIS WEEK to ask for a special session to address the teacher furloughs now. You can find out if your representative has not signed up for a special session yet by visiting our website at:

www.hawaiieducationmatters.org

If you want to send email please write to Senator Will Espero who is collecting testimony from the public on solutions to the furloughs. Please make your message powerful by including your name and street address or district. Send your reasons for wanting quick resolution and compromise from all sides now to:

senespero@capitol.hawaii.gov

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the children of Hawaii.

My grandchildren go to school in Hawaii. They are autistic and need to have not only a routine, but also special services that are important for his progress. Maybe there is another way of cutting some of the budget without having this chopped up thing every other Friday.Maybe adding a week to their Summer vacation or a couple of days longer winter break would be better than have it spread like this all over the place!!! It is hard for any parent, let alone special needs parents to have to deal with this change in the child's routine. My daughter is a dedicated mom and I know she will be there for her children, but I am afraid that they way they decided this was unconstitutional and that would never be allowed in this country. Parents would never put up with this.

I grew up in Hawaii and have family still there. I was appalled to hear that education has become such an embarrassingly low priority. Step up Hawaii! Cut back on some government construction and waikiki upgrades, and give the keiki the education they deserve!!!!

Education is such a treasure. By taking this away from our keiki, what kind of message is this conveying? That saving money takes higher priority over our keikis education? They have the world at their fingertips and it is slipping through if we take education away.

Enough is enough! We will not allow our children to be placed last on the list any longer! If all men are created equal, they should be educated equally! A fair education in the state of Hawaii should not be reserved for the rich! We WILL NOT stand for it!

ABC News Reported on 10/23/09 at 6pm, Hawaii now has a 4-day school week; putting the Teachers interests above the Students. Already ranked at the bottom, Hawaii was recognized for having the fewest public school days in the nation. An expert said a better solution was to get rid of the bad teachers, reward the good teachers and expand class sizes so the children would not suffer at the expense of our government's failure to balance the budget. How can elected officials and Union leaders sleep at night knowing they are responsible for these children not receiving the CARE they deserve?? You sacrificed a child to save the job of an adult.

Making an across the board budget cut is not a good solution. We, citizens, have not made equal cuts in our household spending to balance our budgets. We have eliminated what is unncessary such as eating out, buying jewelry, purchasing toys, etc. We have given up these "wants" to sustain our "needs" which are a roof over our heads and food on the table. Our government needs to make similar cuts in their budget. Please do not sacrifice our children's education and our future for the sake of fairness to all interests.

This is hurting our Children and our families. Something needs to be done post haste to remedy this situation. In my 37 years of life I have never heard of a 4 day school week, not to mention that our children have already lost important music, art, and physical education programs. How much more will they take from the Keikis??

You cannot monetize a child's education because each and every experience they have with their teacher is invaluable and cannot be measured in dollars, budgets, or contracts. Our children are our future, their education is of upmost importance. If you agree with that statement then its impossible to see how Furlough Fridays are the answer to our State's budget shortfall. Stop Furlough Fridays.

I have a daughter in SPED Kindergarten. These furloughs will greatly impact her progress. I don't think lawsuits are the answer. But I do believe the furloughs are a big mistake, not only for SPED students but for the regular education students as well. There has to be a better solution for the budget issue. Children are the future leaders of our Nation! They deserve the best education possible and cutting back school days is not in line with that goal. Let's figure this out.

I would like to see a major improvement in Hawaii's public school system. As a military mom and volunteer in the school system for over 10years;I am highly offended by this chaotic school system. Our children are not receiving the adequate amount of time or proper resources for learning. They are truly being left behind.I am hoping for someone to here this plead. Thank you.

As a parent of a special needs child I am very upset at the loss of 17 days from the school year. Not only is my child losing precious learning days, these are also days where he receives much needed speech and occupational therapy. I also had to request a day off from work for this past Friday because most of the programs offered for day care, do not accept special needs children. I don't understand why these furlough days could not happen during the summer or during the waiver days already scheduled for this year. Hawaii students are already at a disadvantage compared to other states when it comes to education. There has to ab etter way without sacrificing our children.

The children are being robbed of their right to an education! Our test scores are already horrible, and what do you think kids are going to do when they have an extra day off with no supervision?! they will be more likely to partake in deviant behavior! how can we let this happen!?

I am glad that Hawaii parents stand for this. Gov, you know they need more time and more resource, not less. For most of the parents I know, education is priority No. 1. Can't government think that way? Please give kids and public education a little more respect.

She came in speaking of the importance of education, and is now showing that it really is not that important. When will we hold these politicians accountable for their empty rhetoric? Taking from the keiki, the future of Hawaii is never acceptable... The greatest leaders do so by example. Cant we find ways to trim the fat from the places that can afford to give, instead of stealing from the children?

These furloughs are disgraceful, unnecessary and pathetic. The keiki of Hawaii deserve better treatment than this. I'm pleading with you to put them back in the classroom, NOW! Governor Lingle, Hawaii Legislature, DOE, BOE and HSTA aren't you concerned about educating the children of Hawaii and the future of Hawaii? Surely, other departments should have been cut and education should have been untouched. You've taken "No Child Left Behind" to the extreme. Auwe!!

I am appalled that my State has sunk to even new lows with regard to our schools. We ask too much of our teachers, and we invest too little in our schools...too much in the "State" DOE. This is unacceptable...Cut the State Department Heads pay, furlough the State employees. Letting the children out of school has wide ranging secondary and tertierary effects.
