HB 568 Ohio Pit Bull Ban

Target:
127th Ohio General Assembly, Ohio house of Representatives

Ohio House Bill 568, introduced by Representative Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati, seeks to prohibit the ownership, keeping, or harboring of a dog that "belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog." Furthermore, if this bill is passed and adopted into law, all such dogs will be seized and euthanized...**THIS INCLUDES YOUR FAMILIES PET** It is imperative that all concerned dog owners in Ohio contact their elected representatives and express their vehement opposition to this draconian legislation.

HB 568 unacceptably provides that:

* No person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog.
* No later than 90 days after the effective date of this bill, a person who owns, keeps, or harbor a pit bull dog will be forced to surrender the dog to a dog warden.
* Within ten days of surrender, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog.
* If an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull, the officer may apply for a search warrant. After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the dog and transfer the dog to the dog warden, who shall euthanize the dog within 10 days.

Please help stop this. All it takes is some half brained dog warden to think your lab or lab mix looks like a pitbull. Don't let this happen....If it does your breed could be next! Speak out against it!

I'm terrified of this spreading. It's a witch-hunt for pit bulls. They as a breed have done NOTHING wrong and to eliminate or limit the breed is unforgivable.

I was born and raised in Ohio and have always been proud of my home state until I heard about this bill before the General Assembly. I have two American Pit Bull Terriers and they are the most loveable and devoted companions not just to my husband and myself but also to our entire family including young nieces and nephews, other family pets, friends and visitors. To make a generalization about this breed is short sighted and ignorant of facts. Please do not allow this bill to pass through the General Assembly, it would be a travesty to euthanize such wonderful animals.

This is unconstituitional and i want to know if you are going to pay for the counseling for my two young boys after their beloved pet is riped from there arms and murdered! It is NOT the breed it is the owner.

I think it is wrong to kill all pit bulls. I love my Buster very much. I can see having insurance and lisenced, but just killing that's WRONG! As for many years, the color of your skin, the size you are, how you live, where you live, have always been major problems of discrimination. Crazy, now its what kinda of dog. Dogs of any breed can turn on anyone. A Pomerainian can turn, any dog can become angry. Just like humans only they fight with their mouthes. Not all Pit Bulls are vicious, most are loving and affectionate. My little guy is very personable and seems more like my cats than a dog. PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS A LAW, MY DOG DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG!

i definately do not agree with HB 568, because its not right to punish these poor animals just because of what they are....and the legislative thinks they are being smart by doing it...but really any dog can bite...i have a pitbull of my own and i cant even imagine a day without his loving ways....and i think that this HB 568 is just like segregation against the blacks that we had in our history....and our government fought for that y cant it fight for the poor pit bulls!!!!!!

The proposed pit bull ban is rediculous. I have owned two pit bulls in the last 23 years without any agressive incidents. My father is a veterinarian so I have been exposed to many breeds of dogs. Any dog can be made to be mean and agressive. This ban punishes responsible owners and many wonderful dogs. My last pit bull lived to be 13 and was always loving and playful with our 4 year old son. Make the dog fighting laws tougher and punish those that are not responssible owners. Public awareness of being a responsible pet owner and stiffer penalties for dog fighting are positive steps. This proposed ban is an irrational act that will ultimately fail and cost more taxpayer money in enforcemtn and legal battles than implementing stiffer penalties for dog fighting and irresponsible behavior.

Any dog can be aggressive. All the pitbulls I have come across are the sweetest things, but yet Ive been bitten by a Border Collie and met vicious labs, german shepherds, and others. If pitbulls are going down, others should go too.

you could train any dog to become vicious if pitbulls should get band then you might aswell been ever kind of dog out there

This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. I have been a dog owner for over 20 years and I can tell you that I have owned a couple of "red zone" dogs and they have not been Pitt Bulls. In fact, they were "mixed" breed...This is ridiculous to single out one breed. Dogs are what you make them, not matter what breed. If they are loved and treated properly and trained there is no reason that they can't be wonderful pets.
