Ohio House Bill 568, introduced by Representative Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati, seeks to prohibit the ownership, keeping, or harboring of a dog that "belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog." Furthermore, if this bill is passed and adopted into law, all such dogs will be seized and euthanized...**THIS INCLUDES YOUR FAMILIES PET** It is imperative that all concerned dog owners in Ohio contact their elected representatives and express their vehement opposition to this draconian legislation.
HB 568 unacceptably provides that:
* No person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog. * No later than 90 days after the effective date of this bill, a person who owns, keeps, or harbor a pit bull dog will be forced to surrender the dog to a dog warden. * Within ten days of surrender, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog. * If an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull, the officer may apply for a search warrant. After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the dog and transfer the dog to the dog warden, who shall euthanize the dog within 10 days.
Please help stop this. All it takes is some half brained dog warden to think your lab or lab mix looks like a pitbull. Don't let this happen....If it does your breed could be next! Speak out against it!

I feel any and all domesticated pets can be made into mean dangerous animals, they are made this way not because of their breads or the so called "nature" of the bread. People and their treatment of animals create and build their temperment, be it good/peaceful or evil/combative. A teacup puddle can be mistreated and abused and because just as dangerous.

Maybe we should start euthanizing "breeds" of people that are vicious and dangerous.

Dangerous and vicious dogs should be labeled based on their actions not breeds. A loving famil pet should not be taken based on the publics fear of pit bulls. My dog hasn't bitten anyone and should not be punished. Ban the deed no the breed!

I think it is quite unfortunate, that a beautiful, loyal, and faithful breed of dog has gotten a horrible name due to a few cretins that train these gorgeous animals to kill. I have known quite a few friends that have had american pitbulls as pets, and never have I encountered a more graceful dog. This bill is repungnent. Instead of punishing these dogs and the law abiding families that they belong to, stricter penalties should be enforced against the criminals that commit the barbaric act of dog fighting. Thank you.

dogs are like humans you cant ban a race of ppl just because of other people views and disbeliefs about the crime they commit. you should arrest bad owners.

this is wrong we should not ban a dog because of some people. that have the mind of a two year old and like to make a dog mean and attack people or other dogs.we should be able to own any kind of dog its a free world well i thought it was. man u can carry a gun but u cant have a certain kind of a dog if u look at it thats crazy so we need to ban this dog.

None of the pets in our family have been raised to be more loving and loyal than our pitbulls. The breed requires extra care and training, and while not all people are capable of that it shouldn't be held against the entire breed/race. Is it just easier for the lazy lawmakers and lax police officers to hold a voiceless animal accountable than a person who might actually object?!! Only in OHIO, this hot-bed of public corruption could this happen so easily...

we as a family have owned many pitbulls over the years, we have always had them as inside dogs and they are loving and i could go on and on i love my dogs and so do my family.my kids my grandkids my neighbors. you cannot punish any breed of dog for the actions of a few just like you cannot punish a culture or religion may be a little dramatic but the point.....

Please do not allow this horrible legislation to pass. We the people are losing our rights "for our own protection" one by one. Hellen Keller owned a pitbull. Other famous pitbull owners...
Anthony Robbins, General George Patton, Fred Astaire, Stephany Kramer, President Woodrow Wilson, Alicia Silverstone, Humphrey Bogart, John Steinbeck, Fatty Arbuckle, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Mo Vaughn, Barbra Eden, Rosie Perez, Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal, Michael J. Fox, President Theodore Roosevelt, Ken Howard, whose life was saved by his pit bull, Usher, Thomas Edison, Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, Madonna, Jon Stewart, Stephan Jenkins... and a whole bunch more. Tyrone Yates is a jerk.

I live in Arizona, and I know that it is a long way from Ohio, but I can't stand to think of the possibility of my dogs being taken away. If legislation like this keeps getting passed, the irresponsible people who use these amazing dogs to fight and cause problems will simply choose a different breed. Maybe next time it will be a Labrador, or a Husky, or maybe they will decide to go small so the dogs are easier to hide and use Chihuahuas. Banning a breed is no way to solve a problem. Find a way to punish the irresponsible PEOPLE who create these problems instead of euthanising innocent family pets.
Look at all the "pit bull" dogs that are used in search and rescue, for police dogs, as therapy dogs, or even as service dogs. These animals are no more agressive or dangerous than any other medium to large size dog. Besides that they are an American symbol. The military has used them as promotional icons. Petey, in Little Rascals was a pit bull. Helen Keller's service dog was a pit bull. A pit bull has graced the cover of LIFE magazine 3 times. 3 pit bulls, Tahoe, Cheyenne and Dakota were used for search and rescue at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon during 9/11.
Punish the deed, not the breed!!

AN AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER SAVED MY NEICE'S LIFE!!!!!!!!!I AM 28 YEARS OLD AND HAS HAD A LOVE FOR DOGS MY WHOLE LIFE. GROWING UP I HEARD ALL THE "HORRER"STORIES OF "PIT BULLS" HOW VICIOUS AND UNTAMED THEY ARE.OF COURSE I HAD MY DOUBTS. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE BREED AND REALIZED HOW IGNORANT PEOPLE ARE TO THE BREED.HOW COULD SOMEONE DISCRIMINATE AGAINST SOMETHING THEY OBVIOUSLY NEVER EDUCATED THEMSELVES ON?.I WAS DIGUESTED TO FIND OUT MOST SHELTERS EUTHANIZE THE "PITBULL". WELL FORTUNATELY ONE DAY ONE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW A CROWED OF PEOPLE JUST HOW LOYAL AND LOVING HIS BREED ACTUALLY IS.MY NEICE,4 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME,WAS AT MY MOTHERS HOUSE VISITING AS SHE FREQUENTLY DID.MY MOTHER LIVES ON A BUSY ROAD. AS MY 9 mth OLD BELOVED AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER AND I PULLED UP TO THE HOUSE WE NOTICED MY NEICE SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IN THE OPPISITE LANE AND A SEMI WAS COMMING DOWN THE HILL AT HIGH SPEED DIRECTLY AT MY NEICE.BEFORE MY CAR WAS TO A STOP FOR ME TO GET OUT DIESEL(THE APBT) HAD JUMPED OUT THE WINDOW GRABBED HER BY THE PANT LEG AND DRAGGED HER INTO THE FRONT YARD!!!THE SEMI NEVER SLOWED DOWN-DIESEL GOT HER OFF THE ROAD WITH ONLY SECONDS TO SPARE.YOUR PROBABLY WONDERING WHY SHE WAS IN THE ROAD?WHILE MY MOTHER WAS WATCHING HER SHE HAD A STROKE AND WE FOUND HER IN THE HOUSE BUT SHE IS RECOVERING FINE.NEEDLESS TO SAY IF IT WASNT FOR DIESEL WE WOULD HAVE LOST A CHILD.WHY CANT MORE INCIDENCES LIKE THIS BE PUBLICISED? THE APBT IS A BREED SO EAGER TO PLEASE ITS MASTER.IF WELL TRAINED AND SOCIALIZED(AS WITH AND BREED)THEY ARE NOT AGGERSSIVE TOWARDS ANY LIVING THING.AND IF ANY ONE IS READING THIS THAT HAS NEVER READ A BOOK ON THE APBT YOU SHOULD DO SO BEFORE PUNISHING A DOG FOR ITS OWNERS IGNORANCE.WHEN THE APBT WERE FIRST PUT IN TO THE FIGHTING RING, HUMAN AGGRESSION WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE,EVEN AFTER THEY RETIRED AS FIGHTERS THEY RETIRED TO A FAMILY.THE APBT ARE NOT NATURALLY HUMAN AGGRESSIVE-ANY DOG CAN BE AGGRESSIVE IF TRAINED TO BE,OR IF NOT TRAINED OR SOCIALIZED CORRECTLY

I happen to own a pitt bull and he is one of the best dogs I have ever owned. He is loyal and friendly to everyone he meets, he does not know a stranger. I feel that owning a pet is a responsiblity and some people are not very responsible with there pets so in this case the pet gets blamed. When parents are irresposible with there children and they do something bad it always goes back to the parents not the children. So why are all pitt bulls potentially going to be punished for the acts of a selected few irresponsible pet owners. Punish the irresposible owners rehab the dogs and move on.
My dog is good with children and is amazing with my nephew who has special needs. He is his best friend and follows him around the house.
As for pitt bulls being so violent our family pitt bull was standing in his own yard and was attacked by a black lab and never retaliated. So much for for being vicious maybe we should be looking at the owners of this dog for its behavior instead of the dog. Our dog was well behaved because he was taught better. My point is all dogs have the potential to be visious, so killing animals who are doing what they are taught seem stupid. It would be like punishing all of your children every time one of them misbhaves, seems silly does'nt it.

Honestly, if a dog attacks someone, the dog either has rabies, or feels threatened (in most cases.) So if someone gets mauled by a dog, not always, but usually it has something to do with the owner. Some dogs are just mean, but you can't narrow it down to a certain breed. Some Chiuauas can be vicious little bastards too, but we don't outlaw them!! Cocker Spaniels have a tendency to be jerky little creatures as well, and the same goes for them!! Please think of the owners of these dogs. I am a cat person, and i have 6 cats. if someone threatened to take any of them by law. i would move away. So nyah!

First of all, I am appalled that the State of Ohio would try to pass a bill that would put to death many loving family pets. As a pet owner, I know that they are as important as a human member of the family. Anyone who loves ownes an animal (and takes proper care of them) should be upset about this, as their breed of choice could be next.
Most pit bull type dog owners take responsibility for their dogs. Many more than other dog owners because of the bad reputation that has been impressed upon the breed by the media. Any breed of dog can be "vicious" and there are many other breeds that show human aggression much more than the "pit bull" type. Statistics show that, on average, 9 other specific breeds bite more humans than the "pit bull" type dog. This is only what is recorded and statistics are very vague because most dogs are not identifiable.
Pit bulls are not a breed of dog but a description. This would include any medium to large size dog that has short hair and is muscular, am I correct? Who makes this decision? I have to ask; would you be upset if the dog warden decided your much loved Laborador Mix was a "pit bull" type dog and that he would now need to be removed and euthanized? This type of law is not fair to any animal and to all of us who are responsible owners. For those of us "vicious dog" owners who pay the outrageous amount of money to insure our dogs for liability (because it is the law in Ohio) and who register and license our dog's breed (because it is the law). We who choose to deal with the comments and fear of others who only beleive what the news reports. We who make the commitment to give an animal a happy home and go out of our way to help others understand. I beleive a better law would be to ban the chaining of dog and keeping them outside. Concentrating on animal abuse and dog fighting would be a better way to control the problem. Inforcing more laws on breeding and supporting local animal shelters would be a better way of spending time and money.
If you research the history of the breeds and you will be surprised. They were bred to bait large animals but would live in the home and were known as the "nurse" dogs because they were so good with children. They are eager to please and quick to learn and so make wonderful search and resuce dogs and are great as police dogs. They love human contact and attention so they do well as therapy dogs. It is too bad that in Ohio we can not take advantage of these great animals and the help they could bring us.
Please, we all beg you, to take a moment and imagine this law is effecting your dog. Imagine how you would feel if your dog would be taken away and killed. Imagine if you were to be faced with the decision to have move away from your family, your job and the life you know or have your pet killed...just because it is the law.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and we truly appreciate your consideration. B & D

This is the MOST RIDICULOUS bill I have EVER heard of! People around this country need to actually LEARN about breeds before you just decide to kill them all. What if I randomly said we should euthanize all 40yr old men in this country because I heard some bad things about them? It's the SAME THING! Get real people and get educated before you try and play God.
And aren't there more important things to worry about right now than Pit Bulls? Like I don't know, maybe the ECONOMY?! Idiots.

I'm still kind of confused about all these stupid ass politicians, trying to ban a specific breed of dog. How about you hold the owner of the vicious ones accountable for their pets actions? A dog isnt born vicious. They're either severely mistreated till they snap, or they're trained to be vicious. MAKE SURE TO SIGN OHIO, AND THE US SENATE PETITION ASWELL! OHIO BSL IS BULLSHIT. They're trying to ban all dogs from the terrier family, aswell as any dog that will be 100lbs full grown.

No breed deserves to be seized and euthanized. Whether a dog is deemed dangerous should depend on what the dog has done, not the breed. I do agree that there are some serious issues reguarding Pit Bull dogs. Their attacks on people and other animals is far more severe than in other breeds....and YES normal, loved, spoiled, wouldn't hurt a kitten, pet Pit Bulls (which have never seen the inside of a fight ring) HAVE turned on family members. It seems that it's the nature of the attack and not the frequency that is my issue. I do feel that if the breed should be eradicated it should be done thru spaying and neutering...not by killing animals that have never caused harm.

If this bill is passed i think it would be absolutly rediculess. Not all pitbulls are vicious. Only a few. They are probably the most lovable dogs that a person can own. If the people that are proposing this bill spent some time with a pitbull maybe they would understand.

I cannot even believe we are seeing something like this even be considered. These dogs are some of the best dogs out there. If they are not taught to fight, they are just like any other family pet. Even if they are taught to fight, as it has been proven in the Michael Vick case they can be rehabilatated. They just want to make us humans happy and they want to be loved by everyone. Just about EVERY pit bull that was taken from the Michael Vick situation was put into good loving homes. I think the documentary said there was 1 or 2 dogs that couldnt be rehabilatated. Thats huge. Even when these dogs are taught to fight they really dont want to. If any of you havent watched the Michael Vick Dogs rehabilatation documentary, I highly recommend you see it. Maybe a copy needs to be sent to the lawmakers to view too. We absolutely cannot allow something such as this law to happen!!

This is outrageous. I have two pit bulls and they are the best dogs ever. What's next? Are you going to start taking the children that misbehave. It's the same thing as far as I'm concerned because my animals are a member of my family. They have been raised in a caring and loving household and have never shown any signs of aggression towards anyone. I take my to my daughter's bus stop all the time, where all the children love to play with them. You can't base the entire breed off of the one's that you see on tv that were raised by idiots. Any dog can be made aggressive; it's how they were raised. Anyone that doesn't believe pit bulls are great pets are more that welcome to come see mine and how they interact with my family (including my 8 year old) and the community.
