Justice for foreigners in Japan

On January 22, 2007, OSAYUWAMEN IDUBOR, a Nigerian national and owner of a cafe/bar in Yokohama, was arrested by police.

He was formally charged on February 9, 2007, of raping
a Japanese woman in the early morning hours of November 1, 2006.

He had been held since arrest in the Kagamachi Police Station awaiting trial, and on May 11th 2007, he was transferred to the Yokohama Detention Center (kouchi shisho) .

Then he was transferred to Tokyo in early March this year.

His lawyer, Mr Tsurusaki of Yokohama, petitioned for his release on May 21, 2007, but was refused by the court.

(Mr. Idubor could be recognized from TBS TV show "Koko Ga Hen Dayo Nihonjin" which aired some time ago)

There is no material evidence to justify holding him in police custody. Nevertheless, since the foreigners in Japanese criminal cases are considered more of a flight risk than Japanese, he remains in custody.

== THE LATEST NEWS (2009.12.15) ==

He has spent more than 2 years now in prisons and we are expecting the release soon. Here is the laterst postcard that was sent to me.
This Petition will be sent to Ministry of Justice Japan.

if one can go down for three years on a charge with no material evidence, and for being a foreigner, its open season. Anyone can point the finger at you and say you raped them, and the cops will incarcerate you for a year, and you can be convicted now even without a confession.

If you know you or a family member or friend will visit Japan in future then you have to take action now because it can happen to you.

Human rights is for every body regardless of race and colour. Help us fight  this good fight and restore human rights to foreigners livng in japan.
