Help get Sarah the elephant to a sanctuary

The elephant pictured is Sarah. Sarah is a Ringling Brothers' circus elephant who, like other elephants, has been forced to perform unnatural tricks in an unnatural setting. Sarah has been performing tricks for several decades. She's fifty-four years old. On the last night of a two week circus run in Anaheim, Sarah walked with other elephants and the elephant "handlers" to the train, where they would be loaded and taken to Ringling Brothers' next run in Ontario. On the way up the ramp Sarah struggled, fell, and collapsed. It took ten minutes for Ringling's employees to get her positioned (using a plank to lessen the ramp's grade) so she could pull herself up. Ringling has already been cited by the USDA for neglecting Sarah. The USDA issued the citation for Ringling's improper treatment of a chronic urinary discharge problem that has plagued Sarah.

Animal Defenders International (ADI) has filed another formal complaint with the USDA. (The USDA complaint is available upon request.) The complaint urges the USDA to re-examine Sarah after this recent fall in Anaheim. ADI's Campaigns Director Matt Rossell:

“Sarah is sick and the stress and fatigue has likely led to this dangerous fall. This elephant needs to be taken off the road immediately so she can be properly evaluated and treated by a veterinarian. Many traveling elephants are sick and still forced to perform—and incidents like Sarah’s fall underline the dangers faced by animals chained and caged in this impoverished life on the road.”

Sarah has worked long tours for Ringling for many years. She's fifty-four. She has a chronic health problem. It's time to request that Sarah be released from the unnatural life of a circus elephant, and be allowed to live the rest of her life in an elephant sanctuary. Please sign this petition requesting the USDA go a step further than an exam, and assist in getting Sarah to a place where she can roam, and be an elephant.

For over 18 years, ADI has conducted investigations of circuses all over the world and has produced comprehensive reports, including one in the U.S. called “Science on Suffering,” which details evidence of animal suffering in circuses as a result of extreme confinement, constant traveling and cruel training practices. More information is available on the ADI website: http://adiusa.org.
