STOP INDEPENDENCE OAKS DEER KILLINGS (Clarkston, MI)

Independence Oaks County Park will allow the killing of deer on Mondays and Wednesdays starting November 15th through December 8th . Hunters armed with muzzleloaders and slugs will kill deer on Monday and Wednesday from noon until dusk. Even though the park will be closed, there will be no way to ensure neighbors, visitors, their kids and pet...s that access the area by foot, will not enter the park on those days. The use of firearms in an urban area poses a risk to residents and passersby. Killing deer for population management purposes has also proven to be INEFFECTIVE, UNNECESSARY and can become VERY COSTLY to tax payers.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Please take action today! Let Park and County Officials know that as an Oakland Co. resident and taxpayer you are outraged with their decision to continue the killings.

Call and Write letters to:

> Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission: ocparksATco.oakland.mi.us

We, the undersigned, oppose lethal methods of deer management at Independence Oaks County Park in Clarkston, MI. The use of firearms at the park can pose a safety threat to neighboring residents, park visitors and passersby, their animal companions and other wildlife. Stray bullets can travel a long distance (further than the established 450 ft). The latest deer population survey shows numbers below those recommended by the DNR and the environmental damage study is outdated and does not justify the elimination of more animals.

We kindly urge the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Executive Officer, Mr. Daniel J. Stencil, to implement alternative non-lethal methods to manage the deer herd (only if it becomes necessary), and to prevent deer-vehicle accidents (DVA%u2019s) in high accident areas (such as improved signage, reflectors, reduced speed limits, etc.), as well as to educate neighbors on how to protect their property from deer damage and live in harmony with wildlife.
