Keep Lucy

Lucy Ann Tuskan, sometimes known as LuLu, has been my baby kitty since I was in Kindergarten (I'm now 20). My family found her after some neighbors abandoned her. She is a soft, black cat with a big heart and big belly. Some of her favorite things to do are meow, eat, sleep, and cuddle. Lucy is a playful cat. She always loved to run around when she was allowed to go outside. She's had a long life, full of many adventures. To name a few, she once found her way back home after my dad dropped her off many miles away. She is very smart. Another time, Lucy got in a fight with a possum and won, leaving with part of her ear missing. She is very strong and brave. Lucy even went through a wild phase in her life and had two litters of kittens. She was spayed soon after. Sadly, she's grown older throughout her years. LuLu takes medication daily for a thyroid and heart condition that's crushed into some wet cat food. She's become addicted to the food and goes a little crazy without it. But come on, who doesn't go crazy when they're hungry? Due to her medication and the hot summer, she tends to shed. It's not unusual for me to find some Lucy fur clumps scattered throughout my house. She's still my little kitty regardless. She's always there for me anytime I need to vent or pet away upset. Every time I come home after being away, I see her waiting for me in the window. I once read somewhere that cats only lick people they consider family. LuLu's scratchy tongue never ceases to find me sometime during the day. She knows we're family.
Two years ago, I started college and left home. One of my favorite things about coming home from college would be holding Lucy. My mom was left to take over cat duty, and I guess Lucy began to annoy her since I wasn't there to help anymore. My mom is moving in a month or two to a new home. She told me that she doesn't want to take Lucy. I immediately didn't think she was serious. Who would just abandon a pet, especially one that's been in the family for so long? My mom told me to take her with me when I move into my new apartment in Murfreesboro, but my apartment doesn't allow pets (plus I already have a contract signed). It wasn't until last week that my mom informed me that I had a month to find Lucy a new home. She doesn't want her scratching the furniture (even though it's already been scratched), leaving fur everywhere (even though vacuums do the trick), bringing fleas into the house (even though Lucy is an indoor cat), etc. I just didn't understand how my mom could tell me this and truly mean it. She told me that if I don't find her a home, she would take her to the animal shelter. What my mom doesn't understand is that people don't want an old cat who meows too much, sheds, and needs medication. Only people that know and love Lucy would accept it. I do fully. Shelters don't keep animals that need medication because it's costly, and the animals have to be put down. Lucy can't go there. I need my mom to see and understand that Lucy is a part of the family and has to stay. Puppies can ruin furniture, shed, and bring fleas into a house. So getting rid of Lucy and getting a puppy won't solve anything for my mom even though that's what she wants. Just to make it clear, my mom doesn't hate Lucy. So don't call her cruel or anything. My mom is just stressed and is having trouble understanding the situation.

The bottom line is that Lucy is my family. It's not her time to leave me yet. I've cried so many times thinking about this whole situation. She doesn't deserve to be abandoned for the third time in her life. She needs to be loved until she's ready to go to Kitty Heaven.
All I'm asking is that you sign this petition to "Keep Lucy." I hope my mom sees this and realizes how important she is to me and that she needs to stay at home with her family.

Thank you,
Rachel
