Helping Babies in the South Okanagan

Currently within the Okanagan there is only one facility in Kelowna providing sufficient space and care for mothers and their newborns. Meaning any parents in the South Okanagan must travel to Kelowna, or sometimes even Vancouver, if their newborn needs extra attention after the birth and a bed in the nursery.

Penticton Regional Hospital nursery needs to be funded and staffed to at least a level 1B status in order to provide decent care to families in the South Okanagan. We are delivering approximately 700 babies/year in our area and that number appears to be increasing. It is not right that nursery services should be declining and specialized newborn nurses leaving at a high rate.

Parents in the South Okanagan are tired and frustrated having our nursery closed due to funding. We want our babies and moms in our nursery until they are able to go home.

Penticton and surrounding area are looking for your support to re-open and maintain the level 1B status at the Penticton Regional Hospital.

I think the nursery needs to be appropriately staffed with trained nursery nurses.

It is unfortunate that parents are being redirected to KGH or BCCH to receive neonatal care due to lack of funding in Penticton at PRH. It is imperative that we change this situation to reflect adequate care at a leve l 1B status. I am absolutely dumbfounded that this situation has not been addressed months ago.

I myself am having a baby in Septembre and would hope that I can receive any help we need right here in the Okanagan. We should not have to travel all over the province to receive the care we deserve.

Both my daughters were born at PGH and it would be heart breaking for all those other mom's to be expecting or not to have to travel else where to deliver their children. It's already bad enough that some of us have to travel more than an hour just to have a hospital with the facilities need to deliver babies now you have to travel twice as far??? Does this make sense??? I think not!

My son was born 2 months early. We were flown to New Westminster where I delivered 3 days later and my son remained for 3 weeks. I was so anxious to get him back to Penticton Hospital so that we could be closer to home. When I saw the level of care and cleanliness that was offer at Penticton as opposed to New West I was appauled and almost wanted to be shipped back to the coast. There was even an instance that I came to feed my boy and neither he nor the nurse was anywhere to be found. I found him in their brake room with a nurse I have never seen while she went down to the cafeteria. This was so upsetting. I got to take my baby home the next day so I did not make an issue about it. I totally agree that we need extra trained Nurses and more stringent policies with regard to the Nursery care that our babies get. This is something that these surrounding communities desperately need. Please sign and show your support and maybe we could get some funding to hire some qualified nurses.

My daughter lives in Penticton. She gave birth to my incredible granddaughter last Fall. Thank goodness, she was a beautiful and healthy newborn. However, if she had needed intensive care or even extra care, it would have been horrible to go back and forth to Kelowna, and would have made visiting much more difficult. Please re-open the nursery in Penticton.

I gladly sign this petition as I am thankful the nursery was available when I gave birth to my daughter, last September. My daughter was small and we both needed assistance with latching. She needed to be tube fed a few times to give her strength to keep trying to latch. I'm so grateful that we were able to stay at PRH. It was stressful and tiresome but at least we were together with much assistance from the nursery. I am forever grateful for all the help & knowledge we received during this special time. All moms should have the same treatment. Relocating mothers and babies only adds more stress to the situation which is not healthy for either one.

I recently had a baby at PRH and it was really sad to see that the nursery had been closed. I rather see the budget cuts on administration then on services.

It is important to have a nursery in the hospital not only for babies who have need special care, but also for the healthy babies. I just gave birth a few weeks ago and was in a shared room with three other beds. So the moms who just gave birth had to try to rest with their babies beside them along with three other moms and babies as well. Try resting in that environment. Besides not being able to rest, you could hardly move. By the time you get four beds in the room and four bassinets, it makes for cramped quarters. We were unlucky enough to get the bed right by the bathroom door, so anytime someone had to use the washroom, they had to squeeze by the bassinet where my baby was sleeping. I gave birth in the evening and insisted on being discharged the following morning. Luckily for me it was my second child, so I knew what I was doing and felt secure in going home. The Penticton Regional Hospital needs the nursery back.

My daughter spent the night she was born and the next one in the nursery when she was born as she was throwing up after a long and difficult delivery. The nursery was still in full "status" at that time. I couldn't imagine not having a full nursery. I wouldn't have made it. It makes me and my husband nervous to have another one, not knowing if the help and support will be there to bring a new baby into the world. All of this being said... its time the nursery was brought to the same standards as the peds ward. After spending 15 nights on the peds floor when Hannah was 10 months old, as there was no beds available in Kelowna or Vancouver for her. I have a new appreication for what those doctors and nurses do. Our city and surrounding area needs this hospital, and we need it to be able to handle almost anything.

Families need to be close to home and their support network. Everyone benefits from being able to get care close to home.

I am due with a baby this July. Being from the USA, it is alarming to see a neglect in an area where a country should be most attentive- its children. My sister in law had an emergency delivery two months premature in Penticton and had to spend weeks in Vancouver before she could come back home. This puts severe financial hardship on a family when the father needs to work just to pay taxes and the earliest time of bonding for parents and baby is right after birth. What a sad thing when parents cannot be together given the circumstances of our local hospital. I fully support this petition and look forward to delivering under the care of a wonderful local midwife. Conventional medicine has MUCH to learn about childbirth-

I can not believe that there is only one care unit for newborn babies and mothers in the Okanagan!

We put a fortune into crisis care, and essentially nothing into care like this. Why not? I would rather put MORE money into pre-crisis, self-care, education, etc. helping to do whatever we CAN do to prevent the need for such expensive intervention. Go Heress Salon and Boutique...

I feel strongly that this is absolutely necessary. I recently gave birth to twins in Penticton and experienced a significant amount of stress in the months and weeks prior to the birth knowing that, if any extra care were necessary, we would have to be transferred to another facility and that i may be seperated from my babies. It is not right for expectant mothers to have this stress. Although the birth went well, we were transferred 8 days later to another facility due to RSV - having to be away from home at a time like this is simply horrible! Penticton really needs to receive this funding.
